The biggest example out there has to be Tom Cruise he is the true picture of a professional actor, but never gets recognition. I know he has a somewhat controversial personal life with Scientology and other events. That said Cruise's personal life is an entirely separate issue from what he does for a living. Cruise goes way and beyond what he has to and it's clear he loves what he does. When you're involved in a movie series like Mission Impossible and you learn he does 90% of his stunts you truly realize what an incredible talent he is. On top of this he is a wonderful producer and the majority of his recent movies are his vision. In my mind Cruise is a rare talent who deserves more recognition to the immense impact he has on the movie industry.
This brings me nicely onto the kind of movies that win Oscars. I tend to watch movies for one main reason and that is to be entertained. With that said I would not look towards a movie that has won Oscars as they are rarely entertaining. Tragic stories seem to be more the order of the day. I would rather see an inspirational story such as pursuit of happiness. There is already way too much negatively in this world I would hope that the movies can give us a lift and remind us of the wonderful things in the world.
Now I would just like to focus a little bit on this years winners. Now first of all I am sure all of this years winners deserve their recognition for their contribution to the industry over the years. That said I am not convinced they were deserving on this years evidence. After all lets remember we are not judging on their previous efforts, but on this years movies. I am sure Martin Scorsese is a deserving Oscar winner. That said I was not impressed with "The Departed" and felt it was a major let down. I felt the movie was long and confusing, but the bottom line was I just wasn't entertained by it. I'm sure there will be plenty of people who disagree with me, but that's my opinion. That said similar words could be used to describe plenty of previous award winning films. Maybe this is just it that award winning movies are not the most enjoyable to watch. If this is the case why are we recognizing them with awards, surely the most important thing is the enjoyment of the movie.
Another example is Helen Mirren, yes she is a great actress but does "The Queen" deserve recognition some would say perhaps not. I say this because many people have commented that they do not feel it was an accurate representation. That though is so often the problem with movies based on true stories. Is this really Helen Mirren's fault, well it is and it isn't. Yes, I see the point that she is just following a script. However is it right that someone wins best actress for something that is not accurate. To me it is not as we are supposed to believe this actress is the person they are playing, so when it's not accurate it becomes hard to believe.
With all this said there were certainly deserving winners. Jennifer Hudson proves that despite being rejected by American Idol she can have a great career. Also I was pleased to see "An Inconvenient Truth" pick up an award as it's a message that needs to get out there and a very important movie. In closing what I would like to see another award show recognizing people who really deserve it, yet don't get Oscar recognition. I also want to see more movies that are purely made to be entertaining.

Post a CommentI am not a fan of Hollywood. For years I have seen a slant in a negative, "Me, Myself & I" prromo that is less than enjoyable. How many times can we watch the same people try to outdo each other or their last prank. As for talent, it is sad that most of these "so-called stars", could not talk themselves out of a papaer bag without a script. The actions of these people leaves a great deal to be desired. I would rather pay to see or even participate in voting for individuals/groups/organizations up for the following awards: Best non-abusive media personality, Best Written Publication of the Year, Best Speaking Voice, or Best Military Action of the Year.
