Do-it-Yourself: How to Build Kitchen Cabinet Doors

Jon Leigh
Building your own kitchen cabinet doors is perfect for those who are looking to redo their kitchen. It's less expensive and it lets you add a little extra flavor to your home. And it's not like building cabinet doors from plywood is difficult, is it? Read below to find out.

1. Determine how thick you want your plywood. If you will be trying to attempt to carve designs into your cabinets than you will want to go with 3/4 inch thick plywood. If you just want smooth doors than just go with 1/2 inch thick plywood.

2. Measure the opening on the cabinets. You will need to take this measurement and add on one inch because the door needs to go 1/2 each over on both sides to cover the cabinet.

3. Take your measurements and draw them out on the plywood. After drawing them, you will now cut them out. You can do this with a circular saw. If you don't have one you can rent one from a home improvement store.

4. After cutting, sand all sides of the plywood to make them smooth as a baby's bottom.

5. Now you can apply wood stain or paint to the doors. Allow ample time for them to dry.

6. After the doors have dried you will now want to attach the hinges. Attach two hinges to each cabinet side that is going to be mounted to the cabinet. Use 3/8-inch screws to do this.

7. Add a knob or handle to every door. Using a handle is most common but go with a knob is you like the design better. Just remember if you go with a knob and it is going on a door that is to be up high than you will need to have it towards the bottom of the door. You don't want to need a ladder every time you want to open a cabinet.

8. Attach the hinges of the doors to the cabinet with screws and you are done. That's it. You now have beautifully handmade kitchen cabinet doors that you did by yourself.
