Do it Yourself - Halloween Wreath

Julie Murphy
With the dog days of summer coming close to an end, fall is quickly approaching. It is almost that time of year again to rid our decorative palettes of the bright summer flowers and colors, and bring in the fall decorations and tones. What better way to welcome the upcoming season than with a beautiful new wreath on your front door? Read on for a quick and easy idea on how to make the perfect wreath for Halloween.

You can save money by making your own Halloween wreath at home. In fact, you can save money year round by doing it yourself. Reference my article, Creative Wreaths: Save Money and Do It Yourself, found at http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/336299/creative_wreaths_save_money_and_do.html. This information will help you to know what all you will need to make a wreath any time you want.

For a Halloween wreath, I would recommend going with standard Halloween colors - black and orange. You can find all kinds of ribbons at Michael's, Hobby Lobby, or any other craft store in your area. Wal-Mart also carries ribbons at a cheaper price than many other places. Here's a tip : I like to buy my solid color ribbons ( i.e. black and orange) at Wal-Mart, and get ones with Halloween patterns and designs at Michael's.

When you get home, you can wrap the different ribbons around the wreath as you like. I would recommend placing a larger object in the lower right or left of the wreath. I like flowers, so I found some orange mums that compliments the black and orange ribbons I had chosen. I made a small trio of three flowers in the bottom right of the wreath and placed painted wooden objects around the remainder of the wreath to add pizzazz.

Decorating the wreath with Halloween style is easy! If you like to paint, you might consider picking up wooden objects and painting them at home. Last year, I found wooden ghosts, pumpkins, cats and a witch at Michael's. The cost for the wooden objects is usually very cheap. Also, they will often put their supplies on sale - so watch the weekly ads for that.

If you do not want to paint wooden objects for your wreath, there is a plethora of other options. You could use small white squares made of material to make little ghosts. All you would need to do is put small styrafoam balls in the middle and wrap with a thin ribbon. This would easily create the perfect little ghosts for your ghoulish wreath. Feel like not being as frightening? Try finding little plastic pumpkins or candy corn.

If you would prefer to not add small objects to your wreath, you can use color to give off Halloween color only. Try using small patches of clothe glued around the wreath (underneath the ribbon). You could spice that up by adding glitter to make it stand out. Another idea is to intertwine pipe cleaners (orange and black) and glue on fall leaves. You could incorporate black pipe cleaner for Halloween, and then switch out for browns and dark greens to lead into the Thanksgiving season.

Any way you chose to make your wreath will show your own creativity. Homemade wreaths save money and also give you something to do - either by yourself or with your family. So have fun, get creative, and get ready to welcome to approaching season with your decorations!
