Matt took me to the doctor today. He said that we had a strong heart beat, but he wants me to make sure to get plenty of iron. He told us it wasn't anything to worry about, but I need to be extra careful and healthy right now. I'm glad he was there with me. I never expected to be going through this yet. I don't think anyone nelse saw it coming either. It's too bad an event this special had to be tainted by its circumstance.
Breakfast had been a battle, and I knew that dinner would only be worse. I opted to rest in my room, out of the line of fire. I could hear them fighting downstairs. Jack must have pushed Matt just beyond his limits. There was a loud crash that I guessed to be a dish being thrown accross the room, followed by a lot of yelling. I couldn't understand what they were saying, but I could guess easily enough.
I could feel the air leaving the room. I ran, trying to follow it, into the bathroom, and plunged my face into the sink. The cold water stunned my nerves, and gradually soothed my anxiety. I gasped for air, pulling my head out of the water. My hair dripped all over the floor.
Matt must have heard the water running or something, because he was standing in the doorway when I turned around. He startled me at first, but it didn't take long for me to regain my balance. I never understood how he could show up exactly when I needed him every time, but he always did. It almost seemed like he knew my every thought. That idea frightened me to the core, so I pushed it out of my mind.
"Are you alright?" He asked as he handed me a towel. All I could do was nod and wipe my face dry. He tucked my hair behind my ear, and smiled at me. I always loved that smile. It was just like our mother's, so sweet and loving. He warmed my heart without even trying, and made me feel okay again.
He stayed with me, and gave me a cup of tea to help me sleep. It warmed my body from the inside, finally allowing me the peace I needed to sleep. In his arms, I slipped away into a dream.
I met my mother in a garden on the moon, under a trellis entwined with blue roses. When I was a child, she would always add blue food coloring to the water poured into the pot of white roses growing in the garden. I used to think that they grew that way naturally. She led me through the garden into the center of the pathways. There we sat on the edge of a fountain. She handed me a penny to throw in, just like when I was little. I made a wish, and watched the ripples spread accross the surface.
Suddenly, I was four years old again, wearing my old yellow rain coat and pink flowered boots. We ran and played in the water, splashing each other again and again. I felt like I could laugh forever, and nothinng could touch me. Then the rain started falling. It landed softly on my head. She was standing in the doorway, calling me inside. I ran to her laughing, but was stopped in my tracks when I noticed her scars.
I woke in with a panicked scream, but Matt was right by my side. He stroked my hair, and kissed my forehead, telling me that everything was alright. I keep prayinng that he won't leave me alone tonight.
