Las Vegas locals and tourists can take advantage of alternative screenings of biographical movies and documentaries this fall 2011. These special or limited theatrical releases of independent and non-mainstream offerings happen in theatrical venues that also screen Hollywood flicks. These events require regular ticket purchase from the theaters. It is ideal for anyone planning to check out these special movie screenings to confirm scheduled screenings, as they may change without prior notice.
"Senna"
The Regal Village Square Stadium 18 hosts the limited screenings of the 2010 biographical documentary "Senna" in Las Vegas from September to October 2011. This film depicts the life of Brazilian motor racing world champion Ayrton Senna and the F1 accident that took his life at the age of 34. More than a week after the film's Oct. 8 screening, the untimely death of 33-year-old IndyCar racer Dan Wheldon at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway struck the racing world and the Las Vegas community.
"Senna" won a number of accolades, including the World Cinema Audience Award: Documentary at the Sundance Film Festival and the Audience Award for Best International Feature at the Los Angeles Film Festival.
"The Hammer"
The 2010 biographical picture "The Hammer" (originally titled "Hamill") screens at the Rave Motion Pictures Town Square 18 on Thursday, Oct. 27, at 7:00 p.m. This coming-of-age drama explores the life and struggles of the first deaf wrestler and MMA fighter Matt Hamill, a winner of the National Collegiate Wrestling Championship. The film showcases his personal life and his fighting career, including his notable wins over other renowned MMA fighters. This serves as the Las Vegas leg of the film's limited screenings across the United States.
"Rise and Shine: The Jay DeMerit Story"
Rave Motion Pictures Town Square 18 screens the 2011 biographical documentary "Rise and Shine: The Jay DeMerit Story" on Thursday, Nov. 3, at 7:00 p.m. This film features the life of sports star Jay DeMerit -- from being a struggling athlete to finally finding his way toward success and fame as a professional soccer player.
The movie tells his moving and inspirational tale as he travels from the United States to Europe with only his passport, backpack, and $1,800. Without any professional experience, he starts playing in Sunday park leagues and other small-time clubs, earning about 40 pounds a week, until he gets the big break that leads him to the 2010 World Cup.
