Documentary Review: Shut Up & Sing: Dixie Chicks

Poetic Halo

These Chicks Aren't Ready to Make Nice

In 2003, Dixie Chicks singer Natalie Maines stated she was ashamed the President was from Texas. The applause roared from the venue in London, but the United States had a different reaction. In that moment their lives changed...forever.

This documentary is an insightful look into the ups and many downs of the last few years of the Dixie Chicks personal and professional careers. From death threats to Toby Keith there is a very thin line between freedom of speech and what applies to certain individuals.

There is a candid inside look into the country music industry during a media frenzy that wouldn't let up on a major "cash cow." When preparing to release the much anticipated album "Taking the Long Way" and tour problems arise with sales. When offered a deal to cut sizes and venues Natalie refused. Her belief in their fan base and ability was not up for bargaining. The rapid change in fan base hit hard but they stuck it out. They evolved into a mainstream band with no limits.

The emotional side of this film is the real surprise. At one point Martie Maguire sits down with the camera alone and says how she truly feels about Natalie. The emotional moment is full of sincere comments about how much she loves Natalie and if it ever came down to it she would let go of the dream for her. They truly are a sisterhood.

With a much needed insight into the real story, fans and critics around will enjoy the personal backstage pass. Moments with their manager, crew and the chicks themselves prove entertaining and instinctual.

The hook of the film may be political but don't be surprised if you walk out feeling a little more informed and human. The audience reaction was very supportive, clapping at high moments and shouting out when they felt like….freedom of speech was in the works.

If you are looking for a Bush bashing you won't find it within this documentary, as we are led to believe by the trailer. The facts are laid out on the table and you are left to decide what you choose. There is no swaying you one way or the other; you believe what you want to believe.
