DOE Plans to Move a 3rd School to PS 9 in Prospect Heights
Neighborhood: Prospect Heights
Brooklyn, NY 11238
United States of America
The Department of Education (DOE) is planning on moving a third school into the PS 9 building in Prospect Heights. The DOE proposes that Brooklyn East Collegiate Charter School, a middle school, should be relocated to elementary school this fall.

The school currently shares its building with MS 571 and recently made headlines for its innovative bee hive designed library. Students' access to "The Book Hive" library would be severely limited to only 4.5 hours a week if the change goes into effect, according to PS 9's Parent-Teacher Organization.

The school would also have to juggle a new lunch schedule for cafeteria use and force some students to eat as early as 10:30 a.m. The DOE also proposes that the three schools would share the building, located at 80 Underhill Avenue, until 2013.

Parents are urged to attend a public hearing on this matter at PS 9 on Monday, January 24th at 6 p.m. Additional information can be found on the PS 9 PTO website here.
