Does Anyone Have the Right to See Your Hard Drive?

Are Computer Companies Becoming Intrusive?

Corkey Carson
In this country, it seems as if we lose more and more rights everyday. And companies are getting away with things that they shouldn't. And if you purchase a computer today, it's really hard to read through or understand all that legal information. But we don't really understand the gravity of it all till we have a problem with our computer.

My wife had such a problem when she had to replace her hard drive. She was happy to learn that her computer coverage was ample to take care of the hard drive cost. But it was hard for her to understand what her computer company was demanding of her. And of course I became alarmed at what the computer company was asking for.

What I'm talking about here is this question. Does your computer company have the right to obtain your used hard drive from you? Keep in mind that any banking records you have, would be on that used hard drive. Yes, it's not likely that your computer company would do anymore than refurbish this hard drive. But in a case, where there might be a rogue employee, this data could be sold to someone of dubious character.

But this is what really bothers me. You pay for the computer. You pay an arm and a leg for the computer insurance, because they really have no competition. Do you hear that Warren Buffet, and your geico creature? Yea Warren, there is a lot more profit to be made in computer insurance, than home and car insurance. Anyway, you pay for the computer and the insurance, but they want your hard drive back.

I really feel like it's our hard drive and not theirs. With all the data on that hard drive, you could easily compare it to the computer company wanting to look inside my wives diary or something. Of course, I'm not a lawyer, so I have no idea if the computer companies can do this, or if they would just like you to think they can. But, whatever the case, I feel as if our people representing us in government should be watching out for us.

And since computers are a global enterprise, there should be international agreements, as to what computer companies can and can't do. And if you think that you will never face this sort of a problem, then think again. I called my wives computer company and asked how often on average do most computers last before the hard drive goes. And the answer was four years. So, if your not planning on throwing your computer away in four years, you will most likely face this same problem.

I made a Youtube video on this topic, where people can voice their opinions, on this subject if they care to And you can also give opinions on what you should do with the hard drive if you discard your computer. This is the link. www.youtube.com/watch.
