Are the body and soul two different things?
Well many religions teach that when the body dies the soul lives on.
They say the soul is immortal and that death is a great deliverance and liberation, which enables the soul to return to God.
But is this what the bible teaches that the soul survives the death of the body?
To help us answer that let us look at Ezekiel 18:4.
So it says that the soul that is sinning will die.
In other Bible translation it replaces the word soul with person showing that the soul and the person are the same thing.
To help us understand more if we remember the Bible was originally written mainly in Hebrew and Greek. When writing about the soul, the Bible writers used the Hebrew word ne′phesh (NEPH FESH) or the Greek word psy• khe (SEH KEY )′. These two words occur well over 800 times in the Scriptures, and the New World Translation consistently renders them "soul." But these Greek words where never to be taken as anything separate from the body or person. In fact the word nepehesh also translates to breath and we all know that this is a function of the lungs and body when we are living and the word psy.khe aslo translates to life.
So when you examine the way "soul" or "souls" is used in the Bible, it becomes evident that this word basically refers to (1) people, (2) animals, or (3) the life that a person or an animal enjoys.
Lets try to illustrate this with the example of Rachel when she about to give birth to Benjamin we see she had difficulty in child birth which resulted in her death.
Let's just read that account at Gensis 35:16-19
"Her soul was going out" she was taking her last breaths she was about to die.
So we see that the bible uses the word soul meaning the life that was in her and when the body died so did the soul.
Another way we can prove this is by looking how Jesus surrendered his soul.
We can do this by looking at john 10:11
We see here that Jesus surrendered his soul for us.
So how was this done???
Well its obvious to us that that's when he died and supplied us with the ransom sacrifice. So Jesus soul was at its end when he died.
So we see when we look to the bible we see that the bible clearly shows that the soul ceases to exist at the time of death which would mean that the soul doesn't live on after death.
Jesus said that we will know the truth and the truth would set you free so how comforting it is for us to know the truth about the soul and that we can enlighten others by telling them the true teaching of gods word the bible.
