BYU Lights Up SDSU from Outside on Aztecs Home Court

The BYU Cougars led by Jimmer Fredette walked into the San Diego Sports Arena With something to prove Saturday and when the dust settled there was little left to argue. Jimmer Fredette and the Cougars never left a doubt in the biggest win of their 2011 season beating the San Diego State Aztecs 80-67.

Fredette threw the ball in the air as he and his teammates celebrated the win that could catapult them into a number seed in the NCAA Tournament. Fredette told ESPN "We were just really, really excited to win this game," Fredette said. "It's a huge game. Everyone was picking San Diego State to win and I thought our team did a great job of just making shots and getting rebounds, getting loose balls, doing things that we needed to do, and that's why it was an emotional win."

BYU has built an impressive resume with a 27-2 overall and a 13-1 Mountain West Conference record. Their two losses have come to teams that could do well in the NCAA Tournament. The UCLA Bruins beat BYU 86-79 and the New Mexico Lobos are the only team in the Mountain West Conference to defeat the Cougars 86-77 in "The Pit in Albuquerque.

The knock on BYU this season could be that their best out of conference opponent is Arizona, a team they beat 87-66. The only ranked team BYU has faced this season has been their two games against San Diego State. if that is used as the measuring stick along with BYU's RPI which stands at second in the country.

San Diego State falls to 27-2 and 12-2 in the Mountain West. This game was considered a measuring stick for both teams and one that will carry momentum into what is now going to be one of the best conference tournaments in the country.

The Mountain West Conference Tournament will be a battle between the top five schools vying for better seeds in the NCAA Tournament or just battling to make it into the NCAA Tournament. If BYU or San Diego State runs the table in the Mountain West Conference they will deserve the No.1 seed.

There will be debate among the Eastern powers that be but this is a no brainer. The Mountain West Conference has stepped up to the big boys table this year and they deserve a seat at the head of table.
