Does 'The Change-Up' Bring New Life to an Aged Movie Formula?

John Barnett

The old body-switching plot is a tired and true formula that stands strong to this day. Cartoons and video games embrace the cliched plot, and the occasional movie eagerly latches onto it as well. Now "The Change-Up" hopes to polish up this old favorite and retool it for modern audiences. Can they really succeed with a formula that goes back so far that a certain prince and pauper even used it?

Dave is overworked, underappreciated, married, and taking care of three kids. His high-paying job and family life comes with a high price. Mitch, on the other hand, is a free-spirit bachelor without a responsibility or job in the world. Is his freedom all it's cracked up to be? Find out what Tennessee viewers have to say about it.

"There was something drawing me to the theater today. Originally I intended to see some movie about monkeys, but this caught my eye. I tend to abandon serious films for comedies every time I come here. I can't say I was let down; this movie was pretty hilarious. I wasn't exactly impressed with the writing, but the acting was just ham enough to be funny." -- Jackie Franklin, 35, Memphis

"Come on- are you serious? Mitch clearly had the better life. When you boil it down to success versus freedom, freedom always wins. You'll never see me anchored to some fussy wench and three screaming kids. She'll just have to chop off one of my legs or else I'm escaping. Other than that glaring flaw, I enjoyed it. Not movie of the year material, but certainly entertaining." -- Tim Vandal, 22, Memphis

"I think it lasted a little longer than it had to, but it was a pretty amusing movie. If they'd cut some of the filler scenes it would be a less trudging experience. I could have done without some of the dull family Aesop scenes." -- Lydia Chan, 41, Memphis

"Not long after sitting down in the theater I realized I'd made a mistake. Ryan Reynolds is the only thing that makes the movie worth watching. The rest of the film is downright stupid. It makes no sense! They just randomly get switched? WTF. No clever plot device or witty twist? I'll pass on seeing this again, thanks. I want my money back!" -- Lizzy Brown, 30, Cordova

"This film is so mediocre it's -- mediocre. Who thought this would be more than just a forgettable romp through the classic switched bodies storyline. They switch, they learn, they love. I can sum this film up in one word: lame. Switch that." -- Trevor Fallon, 22, Bartlett

"I've had enough. These dumb movies that take a cliched plot and retool it are getting out of hand. No originality! I don't care if Mitch wants greener grass -- he needs to just be content! We certainly don't need two hours of this unfunny mess to convince us of it! Who thought this would be a summer hit? A shameless Hollywood executive, that's who!" -- Shawn Gable, 25, Memphis

"It's a shame that movie makers always play it safe. Rather than try to come up with something new, they always burp out these remakes, reboots, retooling, and rehashes. I've seen this plot over a dozen times in books, movies, cartoons, and games. When are people going to realize this isn't a clever plot line and it isn't the least bit believable? I'd forgive the lack of originality were the script better written. This is like the work of some lazy college student that had to turn something in for their drama class. I'm ashamed to have spent cash to see this." -- Roy Acer, 26, Memphis
