Does Your Child Use a Cell Phone During School?

Kayla McClure

I am the mother of a three year old special needs child. Clearly he isn't of school age for me to be concerned about this now. However I feel that my son should carry a cell phone when he does attend school. Why?

He is a special needs child who has a VP shunt. There are risks and malfunctions associated with the shunt. My son was born with Hydrocephalus. This medical condition causes fluid in his brain to build up and not be able to release properly.

I would feel more comfortable if he carried a phone with him. His VP shunt can malfunction at any time. Safety and well being is my first concern for my son. Times have changed and in certain situations a cell phone should be granted for those who have medical conditions that require special attention.

Parents often allow their children to have cell phones at an earlier age. It is mostly to keep a close eye on them and what they are doing. As a parent I prefer to have my son use a prepaid cell phone, under these circumstances it would make more sense for him to pay for his own minutes. Why? It will teach him responsibility as well as keeping a very close eye on his whereabouts.

The cell phone should be used for medical emergencies only and nothing else while in school. In the school systems it is a rule that kids not use a cell or have a cell phone on the school premises. However this should be changed only for special cases such as children with certain medical conditions and etc.

This would benefit the parents as well as the child. You cannot be too careful of a child's whereabouts. Anything can happen in this time in age. I am a parent who is concerned for the well being of my child and his educational experience.

The cell phone should be used for medical emergencies only and should not be used unless it is indeed an emergency. The phone should be left on vibrate or silent. If it is found to be used for a non medical emergency or another emergency situation there should be consequences. The consequences should be punishment such as grounding the child and have the phone taking away for a period of time. As a parent it is best to know the whereabouts of your child no matter what the circumstances may be.
