Does Depo-Provera Cause Decreased Sex Drive?

If you're trying to prevent pregnancy, it's important to weigh the pros and cons when choosing a method of contraception. Some types of birth control can lead to undesirable side effects, such as a decreased sex drive. What's the point of birth control if you don't even want to have sex? Here's what you should know about how Depo-Provera, which is otherwise known as the birth control shot, may affect your libido.

Will the Birth Control Shot Lower Your Sex Drive?

Loss of sex drive is a reported side effect of Depo-Provera, according to the American Pregnancy Association. When you use a hormonal medication or method of contraception, there is a risk of changes in your libido. When Depo-Provera is administered, the hormone progestin will be injected into your body. This hormone can cause low libido and other side undesirable effects.

Other side effects which are commonly associated with the shot may indirectly lead to your disinterest in sex. Bloating and mood changes are commonly reported side effects for Depo-Provera users, according to the Feminist Women's Health Center. Bloating can make you feel self-conscious about your physical appearance, which could cause you to feel uncomfortable in the bedroom. Mood changes may lead you to experience arguments or other communication problems with your sex partner, which could put a damper on your sex life. Multiple factors can contribute to decreased libido while you are using the shot as a method of birth control.

On the Other Hand…

There's also a chance that Depo-Provera can boost your sex drive. Women tend to be more spontaneous in the bedroom when they do not have to worry so much about the risk of pregnancy. Most women do not worry so much about becoming pregnant while they are using this method of contraception. Although there is a one percent chance that you can become pregnant while you are using the birth control shot, according to the American Pregnancy Association, you also do not need to worry about taking a pill every day. All that you need to do is remember to schedule doctor's appointments for your next injection in the right amount of time, which leaves less room for error than the pill.

Everyone has a different reaction to this and other hormonal medications, so while your best friend may not experience decreased sex drive while using the birth control shot, there is a chance that you may. If you suspect that Depo-Provera has affected your libido or has caused any other side effects, be sure to talk to your doctor. Another method of contraception may be more ideal for you.
