Does Dr. Bronner's Magic Soap Make a Good Toothpaste?

Dr. Bronners Magic Pure-Castille Soap has always been touted as one soap with 18 uses. One of the 18 use is to use it as a toothpaste. The last thing anyone would want is to use soap as a toothpaste. The thought alone might bring back bad childhood memories of a parent swearing they'll wash your mouth out with soap. Despite that, I tried it. My budget made me do it.

With my budget really tight lately I have been trying everything to save even the smallest of pennies, probably even more extreme than most, if not obvious by me resorting to soap for toothpaste. I use to buy Dr. Bronners Magic Pure-Castille Soap all the time but some how it fell off my list, unknowingly. As my purse strings tightened Dr. Bronners's popped back into my head. At the time using it as a toothpaste was far from my mind.

First to save money I went back to making my own toothpaste at home, get recipe here. At one point I ran out of the toothpaste I made and I was a bit too lazy that night to make some more and rather tired too. Sitting on my sink was Dr Bronner's liquid soap. I remembered that toothpaste was one of its many uses. I was desperate. There was no made toothpaste in my house and I wanted to go to bed.

I squirted some of my Dr Bronner's Unscented Baby-Mild Pure-Castille Soap onto my toothbrush and started brushing away. It didn't have a taste. It started to foam up, quite a bit in fact. The more it foamed, the more it had a soapy non taste. No taste but a soapy taste, if that makes sense. The non-taste was not too bad or distracting. So, I continued brushing.

When I finished brushing I felt my teeth with my tongue and they were super smooth. My mouth didn't have the fresh sweet minty taste I get with packaged toothpaste but I figure that is easily corrected with the mint Dr Bronner's and some stevia or adding flavoring to the plain one.

I continued using Dr. Bronners Magic Pure-Castille Soap as toothpaste for a month or two. The result is that if you can get past the lathery soap feel in you mouth it seems to clean very well. The biggest downside I found was that it does not really have any teeth whitening properties, like most brand toothpastes do. My teeth yellowed very slightly. The soap didn't cause them too they just kind of reverted back from my not using my normal paste with whitening properties. Although, an occasional baking soda brushing might correct that.

As a toothpaste I think Dr. Bronners Magic Pure-Castille Soap works really well. My teeth were squeaky clean after every brushing. I would use it again but probably only on occasion or to take camping/traveling. I like the fun flavors I get when I buy pre-made package toothpaste. Although, Dr Bronner's will still make it onto my toothpaste shelf but only for occasional use and penny pinching desperation.
