Drinking Alcohol and the Risk of Dementia and Cognitive Decline
When researchers interviewed 3,327 patients over the age of 75 about their alcohol habits and followed them for 3 years, they found those who drank light to moderate amounts of alcohol had a lower risk of Alzheimer's dementia and other types of dementia as well. Among moderate alcohol users, older people who drank the equivalent of a medium-sized glass of wine or a pint of beer daily reduced their risk of Alzheimer's by 42%.
How Does Alcohol Reduce the Risk of Dementia?
Some forms of alcohol such as red wine contain flavonoids that have an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effect, which may help ward off some types of dementia. It's not clear whether red wine is more beneficial than other forms of alcohol for brain health. More research will be needed to look at the issue.
One Swedish study found that women who drank wine, but not beer or liquor, had a lower risk of dementia. From a health standpoint, it makes more sense to drink red wine because of its natural antioxidants.
Drinking Alcohol Isn't for Everyone
Drinking modest amounts of alcohol, especially red wine, may be good for brain and heart health but not everyone should imbibe. Research shows that drinking even a half glass of wine a day may raise the risk of breast cancer in women. Women at high risk for breast cancer should talk to their doctor before drinking alcohol of any type.
Drinking Alcohol, Cognitive Decline and the Risk of Dementia: The Bottom Line?
A little alcohol may be good for heart and brain health, but don't overindulge. The risks of drinking too much alcohol are far greater than the benefits. Moderation is best when it comes to all forms of alcohol, even wine.
