Give children something to relate to.
Harry Potter and his friends were characters children could relate to. Creating characters like these takes some work. In today's society, reality television and dramas rule the air waves. News stories filled with negativity are constantly bombarding children from every angle. Imagination had become something taboo.
Imagination is more important than ever.
Sometimes children are suffocated with facts. Without a little time away from reality, it is hard to absorb all that is thrown at them. Even adults take a few minutes now and again to day dream. With books, children can do the same thing on an entirely different level.
Kids are still excited about reading.
After spending hours and days reading the seven part series, kids are more than willing to take a few hours to read something interesting to them. Since the characters grew up with their audience, all age groups were taken in. Stores are packed with more fiction than ever for both children and adults. Be excited and read with your children.
Reading is something for parents and children to do together.
Children may shy away from reading if they never see their parents doing it. Believe it or not, children really do learn by the examples their parents set. Taking the time to read the newspaper or novel of your own while your child reads, can be a great way to spend some quality time together. You can also open the lines of communication by discussing what you have read.
Never forget your inner child.
So many factors are causing children to grow up faster than they need to. Giving children a fantasy world allows them to keep hold of their childhood a little longer. Reading about their favorite characters can be a major influence in how they turn out. Either the stiff necked business man or the well loved CEO that believes family comes before business.
In the end it all boils down to doing all you can to keep your child interested in reading. Take a chance a buy them a book for their birthday or Christmas. You can become closer to your child and create a better future for them. Their reading and vocabulary skills grow without them even realizing they are learning.
Allowing children to hold on to their imagination is vital in today's society. How else can they be expected to compete with emerging technologies and ideas? Reading gives them that creative edge. Thanks to books like the Harry Potter series, children are getting back into reading and we should do all we can to keep them interested.
