Does Endometriosis Cause Facial Hair?

Jody Morse
Excessive facial hair, which is a characteristic of hirsutism, is an embarrassing and frustrating problem for women to cope with. Although Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is most often the cause of female facial hair, there are other conditions which can cause the problem. Does endometriosis cause facial hair? Here are some of the things all women should know about the link between this gynecological condition and hirsutism.

The Link Between Endometriosis and Facial Hair

Excessive facial hair is not a symptom or characteristic of endometriosis. Thus, endometriosis is not a direct cause of hirsutism. Women who suffer from endometriosis will not experience unwanted facial hair simply because they have the condition. That said, there is a link between endometriosis and hirsutism.

Danazol is a medication that reduces endometrial tissue and lesions, which helps to lessen the severity of endometriosis symptoms - such as painful menstrual periods, pain during sexual intercourse, pelvic pain, abdominal pain, and fertility problems. Women who use Danazol are more prone to excessive facial and body hair, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Coping with Facial Hair While Using Danazol

Most women will find that facial hair growth will return to its normal state once the medication is discontinued. Luckily, there are a number of ways to cope with facial hair while you are taking Danazol. Here are some tips on how to remove unwanted facial hair.

1. Wax the hair. There are a number of ways to do this. Whether you go to the salon, use a microwavable home wax kit, or purchase wax strips, this is one of the best ways to get a smoother look.

2. Pluck unwanted facial hair. This can be one of the easiest ways to remove hair on the chin or lip that is caused by Danazol.

3. Shave the hair. Although some people would rather wax for a smooth look, others do not mind shaving their facial hair. Since the face is very sensitive, keep in mind that your skin is prone to nicking.

4. Consider electrolysis. Although it can be costly, it may be an ideal long-term hair removal solution for some. Be sure to ask a dermatologist if you are a suitable candidate.

Using Danazol is only one of the possible causes of hirsutism. Other possible causes include PCOS, Cushing's syndrome, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, and adrenal gland or ovarian tumors, according to the Mayo Clinic. The best way to determine what is causing your facial hair is to talk to your doctor.
