Bad breath, which is also referred to as halitosis, is an embarrassing personal hygiene problem. Many people, regardless of age or gender, suffer from this problem. If you have not been able to find a cure for your bad breath, it may be very frustrating. While it may be tempting to try every home remedy for bad breath, it's important to consider oral hygiene. Gingivitis, which is a common form of periodontal disease, can cause bad breath. Here are some of the things that you should know about this condition's link to halitosis.

Why Does Gingivitis Cause Bad Breath?

Individuals who suffer from gingivitis experience plaque. What many do not know, however, is that plaque mostly consists of bacteria, according to the Mayo Clinic. If plaque is not removed right away, it can lead to tartar. Ultimately, the bacteria which cause plaque and tartar can lead to bad breath.

How Do You Get Rid of Bad Breath Caused by Gingivitis?

Anyone who suffers from bad breath which is related to gingivitis should keep in mind that it is necessary to treat the periodontal disease before they will experience an improvement in their problem with halitosis. Individuals who suffer from gingivitis should be sure to keep the following in mind.

1. Brush your teeth, preferably with an electric toothbrush, two to three times a day. Some experts recommend brushing after each meal, but most will find that periodontal disease will lessen simply by brushing more frequently.

2. Floss your teeth daily.
Even if you brush your teeth religiously two to three times a day, you may still experience gingivitis if you do not floss your teeth on a regular basis.

3. Rinse with a mouthwash, such as Listerine. Not only will most find some relief for their bad breath problem, but it will also help get rid of the bacteria that causes plaque and tartar.

4. Continue the routine of brush, floss, and rinse. Many people think that once their gingivitis has gone away, it is gone for good. Plaque and tartar can reform in the mouth if you do not continue to practice proper oral hygiene, however.

Keep in mind that there are many possible causes of bad breath. Individuals who do not have good oral hygiene habits are likely to experience the problem due to gingivitis. Treating the gingivitis is generally the best way to get rid of bad breath.
