Does God Care What You Wear?

Is it Necessary to Worship in a Suit and Tie?

Becky Smith
In my Sunday school class, there was a discussion about the reasons people do not come to church. One of the reasons mentioned was people who say, "I do not have the right clothes to wear." In my mind I began to wonder; does God care what you wear while you are worshipping?

I have attended a few churches throughout my life and I was always taught to wear a dress and nice shoes and to look presentable. Understand, however, I was raised by a family who owned a ladies clothing store. The chances that I would ever have been without dress clothes were nil.

Today's standards are obviously more relaxed as fewer men wear suits and more of them wear nice slacks and sport shirts and many women forgo hosiery, something that would have been unthinkable 30 years ago.

When I was younger we attended a Baptist church where everyone was dressed to the teeth. Even the youngest boys were in suits and girls were in frilly dresses. I got the impression that they were dressing not to impress God, but each other.

In my young adult years I began attending a Pentecostal church. In many people's minds this brings up visions of Tammy Faye, makeup applied with a trowel and hair that had been teased into a giant pouf atop a woman's head. Truthfully, there are women in the church dressed like that, but there are also many women in much more moderate apparel; nice skirts and blouses with tasteful makeup and hair.

What I found the most surprising though was the range of attire that people wore. Women were in everything from cocktail dresses to hot pants. There have been many times I have seen men there in jeans, t-shirts, and leather motorcycle apparel complete with chains. No one blinked an eye at what others were wearing. Why? Because they were there worshipping a God who loves them for who they are and not what they wore to church.

I seriously doubt it matters what you wear because as you had pretty much said in your article in church we are all worshipping The God that loves all of us. I mean to those who do they are the one who will have to face the almighty with that matter. awesome article!

I have been really saddened to see what people turn up to worship God looking like and even seen a Pastor walk out in jeans and T shirt. Now don't get me wrong, The bottom line is that it is the condition of ones heart which matters. The as long as someone is in church for the right reasons to fellowship and praise God then tha is what truly matters.
It is of course more important that the Pastor sticks unflinchingly to the word of God without compromise than wears a suit. Dress does not make you Holy.
HOWEVER... it comes down to respect. I have been in churches and can guarantee that it would be a whole different scenr if the Queen or the Prime minister was visiting. Why should it be different for God? Of course it shouldn't, we should give Him our very best. The Father who died for us, the creator of the universe. He deserves some special effort.

I don't think God cares! Great article.

I'm prestty sure God wouldn't care what people wear to church, exept for maybe thong bathing suits, or see-thru tops without a bra. I think that would be inappropriate and you don't want God to get angry. Also those very short skirts are bad. I'm not sure about Birkenstocks. I'll have to get back to you no those.

I attend a pentacostal church and if you wear pants to my church those ladies will look at you like you don't belong.

Great article! Most younger people and young adults wear jeans and a nice shirt most of the time these days. Heck, you could show up in a bath towel and God would just be happy you are there!

Since I have rarely attended church, I don't really know, but I concur that it really doesn't matter what you wear, God would love you anyways. People are much more relaxed than they used to be. Sitting on a hard bench is hard enough, being comfortable while doing it? Priceless. God will love you even when comfortable! :) Good article!

I've never wondered about it - I've always believed as you and other commenters do; God is much more concerned with what is in your heart and soul than what is on your back. I was raised to wear a dress or skirt and hose to church, and generally still do, but it is out of respect for my place of worship, not to impress. (I don't think any of my clothes would impress anyone anyway!) I recently recorded a Catholic newsletter for the State Library's Disability Services, and the Bishop's editorial was on the "sloppy" clothes that people had begun wearing to mass - and how disrespectful of God that was; apparently there are different views than mine! LOL!

I agree - as with most things, the important thing is what your heart is up to - if you are dressed nicely but with selfish motivations, God is much more pleased with the one dressed in jeans but there with pure motivations. The Bible shows and says over and over that God looks at your heart, not outer appearances.
