Does God Exist? Examining the Arguments

A Brief Examination of How to Approach the Question with Honesty

Jared Moore
God is a God of covenant. Necessary respect is given to God, not too much and not too little. He is God and we are the creation. He is God and the church is His people. God is and has always been. Philosophical teaching on the opposite end teaches that God is without life, or is unconcerned with us.

It is possible to argue the existence of God because everyone has something to say about it. There are three primary arguments that argue concerning His existence. The first is the Atheistic Method. This argument purports that because of pain and evil in the world, there is no god. The second is the Compromised Method which acknowledges the existence of God because of the good in the world. The final method is the Revelation Method which argues that the existence of God is a doctrinal truth based on the revelation of God's Word.

There are several classical arguments concerning the existence of God. The first category of arguments is based on the nature of the universe. One is the Cosmological Augment which argues that every affect must have a cause. The world is an effect; therefore, there must have been a cause outside of itself. The second is the Teleological argument which argues that design supposes a designer. The world exhibits marks of design; therefore, the world owes its existence to an intelligent author.

The Second category of classical arguments is arguments based on the nature of the human soul. The first Ontological argument deals with Anselm. The Anselmian Argument argues that which exists in reality is greater than that which exists in the mind. The second Ontological argument is the Cartesian Argument which argues that we have an idea of an infinite being, so, because we are finite, the idea must have come from God. The third category is the Moral Argument that argues as we know that the Sun really is what its reflection represents it as being, so we know that God is what the nature of the human soul declares Him to be.

There is also an argument from history. The argument from Universal Consent argues wherever men exist in all ages and in all parts of the world, they have some form of religion. The idea of God is impressed on every human language. I believe this is the most convincing argument. Most people claim a religion unless they have been "educated" out of the idea. The idea is impressed upon us all due to humanity being created for God's glory. When new people groups are discovered, they are all found worshipping some deity and participating in some religious system.

I dunno' if I can believe in a higher power that remains dormant while people suffer and die everyday...
