Does Grooming Regularly Impact the Mental Health of a Dog?

Owning a dog is a big responsibility and entails many different things. For example, you have to do much more than just feed and water him or her. You have to bring your dog to the vet for check ups, train him or her to act appropriately and make sure he or she has enough exercise daily, just to name a few of your responsibilities.

Grooming your dog is just as important as all of the above mentioned responsibilities. You might not realize how important regular grooming is for your dogs overall health. Here are just a few reasons you should at a minimum brush your dog daily.

Soften the coat

Eliminate tangles and knots in the fur

Notice any scratches, bumps and or bruises

Bonding

Keep track of any possible growing lumps and bumps

Improve the mental health of your dog

Brushing your dog regularly promotes the healthy growth of new fur and stimulates the blood under neath the skin. The muscles are also stimulated as you brush the coat. This will help you in keeping your dog clean and debris free if you can keep the tangles from getting really bad. Let's not forget all of the interesting smells that a dog can come home with. If the dog is not brushed daily he or she can have all kinds of interesting things stuck in their fur which will cause the snarls and even a foul odor depending on where the dog has been since its last brushing!

A dog that is introduced to grooming early on will likely bond with the person grooming him or her. Being brushed for a dog is very similar to a back rub for a human. You know you love to have your back rubbed, so why not do the same for your dog.

Being able to notice any possible issues on your dog early can be the key to successfully treating any condition in its early stages. This can very well be life saving for your dog. Making sure that cut does not become infected, the wound heals properly and your dog is not having any discomfort is important. These are all things you can continue to watch if you are grooming regularly.

There is much more to grooming a dog than just brushing him or her. For example, dental hygiene and nails. If dental hygiene is neglected your dog can have some serious health issues. Among them are gum disease, loss of teeth and abscesses, to only name a few. Cleaning our dogs teeth should be done at least every other week to keep track of issues within your dogs mouth.

Nail trimming is a very important part of grooming for dogs. Generally a dog is able to wear their nails down through regular exercise, however nowadays dogs are not getting enough exercise to wear down their nails. You should check the mail growth of your dog frequently to ensure he or she is not in any pain.

If a dog's nails are allowed to grow long he or she can begin having difficulties walking. The nails can even grow right back into the dog. This is more typical in dogs that have not had their dew claws removed.

In cases where any part of a dog's health has been compromised it can frequently be linked back to a few things. Most of which could have been noticed earlier if the dog was groomed frequently. Sometimes prolonging the discomfort can lead to a less than happy dog. If the dog was groomed he or she is going to be much happier and possible healthier.
