Does Having a Car Mean More Freedom?

The media is making it seem like it is so wrong for you to have a car, especially if it's considered to be a gas guzzler. But the recent rise in gas prices is causing many people to think about changing their driving habits. Some of the things they are thinking about doing are driving less, taking public transportation, walking, or riding a bike. But other people just can't imagine taking public transportation or getting rid of their cars because of the gas prices. If they live in a city that doesn't have public transportation, they have no choice but to have their own car.

The idea of owning a car for some people gives them a sense of freedom. They can go wherever they need to go and they no longer have to depend on public transportation or relatives and friends to drive them to the places they need to go. Many people just can't imagine giving up their cars to go back to depending on people or public transportation.

Whenever a teenager reaches the age of 16, they are so excited to be able to finally get their driver's license. To them this means they no longer have to ride the bus and they don't have to depend on their parents, friends, or relatives to take them places. When teenagers have their own car it is a step closer towards being an adult and having more independence from their parents.

Older people have similar feelings about having a car. Owning a car also makes them feel independent and it gives them a sense of freedom. Some older people that shouldn't be driving at all continue to do it because they hate the idea of depending on people to give them a ride.

For some people not having their own car can be a big struggle. If they live in a town that doesn't have public transportation they have to depend on friends or relatives to take them places. And some people's friends and relatives are not interested in taking wherever they need to go. As you can see a person in this situation would benefit from having their own car. A car would help them to be free from depending on others to take them places.

Owning a car can be a very good benefit for many people. Some people just can't dump their cars because of the gas prices and take public transportation. If you own a car and are happy with it, ignore the negative media reports and be thankful that you have a car.
