Does the Mayan Calendar Really Predict December 21, 2012 End of the World?

Why Do Some Believe the End of the World Will Happen on December 21, 2012, and What Does the Mayan Calendar Have to Do with It?

Doomsday soothsayers unite! Mark your calendars for the December 21, 2012 End of the World Extravaganza! This time it's real...the Mayan calendar predicts it. We promise. No, those aren't crossed fingers. What do you mean you don't believe my 2012 end of the world theory? Prepare for the December 21, 2012 end of the world!
If you haven't heard the hype, you have probably been living under a gigantic space rock or living on the other side of Planet X. Sensationalists everywhere are predicting the 2012 end of the world.

According to these people the Mayan calendar predicted that a great calamity would cause the end of the world on December 21, 2012. This calamity could take many forms, but all of these doomsday predictors are saying that it will come on the one date predicted by the Mayan calendar: the dreaded December 21, 2012.

What Does the Mayan Calendar really say about the December 21, 2012 end of the world?
The calendar that these people are talking about is a very specific Mayan calendar. The Mayans were a civilization known for their astronomy and intricate (and accurate) calendars. Most of their calendars do not, however, record a 2012 end of the world. Only one Mayan calendar even has December 21, 2012 on it: the Mayan Long Count calendar.

This Mayan calendar chronicles the "Great Cycle," a span of time lasting 5,125.36 years. English anthropologist Sir Eric Thompson extrapolated a begin date for the calendar to be August 13, 3114 B.C.E., which leads to the end date of December 21, 2012. This end to the Great Cycle is the primary cause of the widespread belief in a 2012 end of the world.

Why does the end of the Mayan calendar signal a December 21, 2012 end of the world?
In short, the Mayan calendar doesn't necessarily point to a 2012 end of the world. According to the Mayan calendar, our world has already survived three Great Cycles thus far, and this one should be no different.

In fact, there is much evidence to say that the Mayans viewed the end of a Great Cycle as a time of celebration and luck. One doesn't typically consider doomsday end of the world predictions good luck, and few would celebrate the good fortune of a 2012 end of the world.

What is different about this Great Cycle that signals a December 21, 2012 end of the world?
Many believe the end is coming now because the current Great Cycle ends on a winter solstice, and a very particular winter solstice at that. On December 21, 2012 our earth and sun will align with the center of the Milky Way galaxy, an event that only takes place about every 26,000 years, reports USA today.

There is nothing scientific about the idea of a 2012 end of the world, however. Scientists believe that December 21, 2012 will come and go without event.

Should I plan for the December 21, 2012 End of the World?
For those who like to follow the Boy Scout motto, "be prepared," there is nothing wrong with preparing for a 2012 end of the world. However, the end of the world is a difficult event to plan for, considering everything, well...ends. The discerning would be best to prepare for a December 22, 2012 "World is Still Here Party," and for the life that follows.

Author's two cents notwithstanding, feel free to examine the evidence for yourself to determine whether the December 21, 2012 end of the world theory holds up to scrutiny with some of the resources below.

According to the Bible, the world will not end for quite some years.
First, there must be the rapture, when Christians, dead & alive, will be taken to Heaven.
Then, there will be 7 years of time on earth when the anti-Christ will reign.
After that, the Battle of Armageddon.
After that, the 1000 year reign of Christ ruling the earth.
Not until after that, will the world be destroyed by fire and God, not man will do that.
The most important thing to know now is, when you die, will you go to Heaven forever to live with God? If so, upon what do you base it? Works? Goodness? Baptism? Church Membership? Realize that you're a sinner and that only Jesus can forgive you of your sins and take them away?
If it is the latter, then you are correct. If not, then get a Bible and read John and at least the first 10 chapters of Romans (two books over from John in the New Testament).
Once in Heaven, then time, as we know it, will officially end, and we will know only eternity! Carla

If such an event ever does take place in our lifetimes, the 'Apocalypse' that the religious promise will rain down on the rest of us is much more likely to land on their own heads first, hard and heavy!

Christian history is all theological. A human intellectual construct, attempting to know the mind of God without that mind being revealed by God and has been in perpetual disagreement for most of its' history. Thus unlikely to have anything to do something called truth or God. No more than the intellectual pretensions, vain imagination, the folly of empty hopes. But I suppose it's good to have an occasional example of what is really false, just in case something true actually even happens!

The bottom line is that if a second coming should take place in any form, what must be among the first priorities for such personage is to expose those theological claims which are no better than chasing after wind. And to do so, such a person would have to 'reveal' a m

well i and Christian and i have my doubts about dieing and going somewhere after and would like to say when you die you die and this is the only life you have so you shouldnt be wasting it on stupid thing and enjoy what you have now and never give up whatever you do to keep living on as long as you can because in the end really only the strong will survive and the real question is are you strong?

I doubt if the Mayans predicted anything. Their calendar couldn't go on forever. Think about it. It would be like writing a story with no end. To them, 2012 was forever away. I'm certainly not worried about it. Remember this - don't waste the present worrying about the future. Only God knows when the end will come - not the Mayans or anyone else, and I highly doubt it will happen when the Mayan calendar ends.

Christ is coming back for the 2nd time very soon, but noone not even His Son knows the date nor the hour. As a Christian I am more concerned with getting my personal relationship with Jesus Christ all worked out instead of worrying about the end of the world whenever that will come. Prepare fork His coming and worry about where you will spend eternity, that is the important thing right now. Accept Christ as your personal savior and be ready to face eternity with HIM.

We all will die one day. If you are a Christian you know where your soul is going so why would you care either way?
