Does Nicotine Replacement Therapy Work?

Jim Posey
I like most smokers have run the racket of the quitting smoking method. From chewing on tobacco leaves to meditation, I have been there and done that. Of course, the type of method that everyone (especially non smokers!) knows of is nicotine replacement therapy to quit smoking. When you smoke a cigarette you're not only getting the goodies that come in the form of chemicals and carbon monoxide but you're also getting amounts of nicotine. Nicotine for the uninitiated is what makes you crave the cigarette. Ergo, replace the nicotine your body would have had through smoking with another method on ingestion and you're done - no more cravings , right?

Well I was interested as anyone to see whether or not nicotine replacement therapy (which is just a fancy name for gum and the patch) works so took it upon myself to buy a pack of the gum to munch on during the day in hopes of subduing my nicotine fascination. It costs a pretty penny, so I was excited to see the results.

Early in the day I popped my first piece of gum when I would normally be smoking at work I chewed for a minute without receiving any satisfaction comparable to a cigarette. Then I began to get nervous that I bought lame sticks of nicotine gum and gnawed harder. I was determined to get every last drop of nicotine out of this stick of gum. I began to feel my cravings soothe and I was able to relax.

The big test of nicotine replacement therapy was after dinner. After I eat dinner I am ready to smoke half a carton so if it satisfies these cravings then nicotine replacement therapy was truly manna from heaven. I nervously started fishing a piece of gum in to my mouth already craving for Camel. I started chewing while my thoughts turned to sitting on my porch and watching the smoke exit my lungs and float away. The gum kicked in and I was not in an urgent state of smoking any longer, though I still ended up having a cigarette.

This is the only is with nicotine replacement therapy. Though it satisfied by cravings on a chemical level it did not do to much for me on a the psychological level. I believe that nicotine replacement therapy combined with E-cigarettes is probably the best option smokers have today to help quit smoking.
