NuvaRing, which is commonly referred to as the vaginal ring, is one of the newer methods of contraception. As a result, many women are unfamiliar with the risks associated with this type of birth control. It can be a convenient option for women who don't want to worry about taking a pill every day to prevent pregnancy, but does it pose any long-term side effects? Can using NuvaRing lead to infertility? Here's what you should know before using the vaginal ring.

Will Women Experience Infertility After Using NuvaRing?

NuvaRing is a hormonal method of birth control. The vaginal ring deposits both estrogen and progesterone into your body, according to the American Pregnancy Association. These hormones suppress ovulation, which reduces the risk of pregnancy.

According to the NuvaRing website, the vaginal ring can cause temporary infertility after it has been removed. Since the vaginal ring and the combination birth control pill both contain the same hormones, it's no surprise that they both can prevent you from becoming pregnant right away. How long does temporary infertility last, though?

How Soon Can You Get Pregnant After Removing the Vaginal Ring?

The good news for women who wish to become pregnant in the near future is that conception can occur shortly after you stop using NuvaRing. It generally takes women one to two months after their first period to begin ovulating again after they have removed the ring, according to Planned Parenthood. The first menstrual period that you experience is withdrawal bleeding. After that, you will not experience a period until ovulation has started again.

Is it Possible to Get Pregnant Immediately?

Some women may become pregnant shortly after stopping NuvaRing, according to Planned Parenthood. It is possible for ovulation to return within two weeks of stopping hormonal methods of birth control. If you do not get a period within one to two months and/or experience pregnancy symptoms, it's important to take a home pregnancy test. If you continue to suspect that you could be pregnant despite a negative test result or if ovulation doesn't return within six months, it's important to see your doctor.
