Does Oxi Clean Really Work?

I Put it to the Test

Jennifer Wright
How many of you have clothes with stains that will not come out? I know I do. As a matter of fact I think that my clothes are worse then my children's clothes are. The majority of my clothes that get badly stained are my shirts which get awful stains on the front.

A few items that I decided to use for this test also had some set in grass and blood stains. Now, we all know that those are stains that sometimes never come out. In the past I have used a lot of stain removers and nothing seemed to get them out completely. So I decided to try Oxi Clean.

I chose to use the Oxi Clean Versatile. There are a few different kinds of Oxi Clean; there is the plain Oxi Clean, outdoor and versatile. I chose this one because it came in a smaller container and I wanted to see if it would work first.

The smaller container was about three dollars compared to the larger one was closer to eight dollars. If you plan to use a lot, I would definitely go with the larger container being that the smaller one holds only 16 oz of powder.

Since the stains on my clothes were pretty set in so I needed to soak them. It says on the label to use two to four scoops per gallon of water, so I filled up the bathtub and added the powder. According to the directions you need to add 2-4 scoops per gallon of water. I thought that seemed a bit extreme, but continued on.

After I added the clothes I let them soak as directed for 1-6 hours. I let mine stay in the whole 6 hours. When they were done I put them in the washer and just for good measure added in another scoop along with the laundry soap.

When my clothes came out of the dryer there was not a stain to be found on them. It worked, it really worked. I haven't tried the Oxi Clean on anything else, but it seems to me that Oxi Clean is worth buying as a stain remover.

Oxi Clean can be used in regular laundry as a booster, to pre-treat laundry, soaking, on your carpets and also on hard surfaces like your kitchen your bathroom. So, if you have got some harsh stains on any of your clothes I would definitely give Oxi Clean a try.

It does work. We have carpeting in the bedroom that had a nasty iced tea spill and a number of dog urine stains that we've never had any luck getting out. I tried using an excessive amount of the powder (about 2 1/2 cups in a gallon of hot water -- didn't specifically target those proportions, and it's probably 4x the recommended amount), rubbed it thoroughly and in large quantities into the stains, and finally went over the whole thing with a carpet deep cleaner. I had to repeat it on some of the more stubborn stains, but it did the job.

Never put this kind of mixture in a spray bottle! Confining it may cause an explosion because of the pressure of the oxygen being released. But in an open container it's fine.

We actually have some janitorial applications for that stuff, usually having to do with carpet cleaning.

OOPS! Sorry for the typo on Oxi Clean. I sure wish there was an edit button for article comments. :)

I've been using Oxi Clean for years about 5 years and, believe me, my family has put it to the test. I mainly use it for laundry but have also used it to get out a tough carpet stain. Oxie Clean is great stuff!
