Dog Breeds that Are Called Non Shedding by AKC

Allergy sufferers and people that clean house are among the people who prefer a dog that does not shed. According to the American Kennel Club website, there is no dog that comes with a 100% guarantee that they will not shed, however there are breeds that are less likely to shed. Breeds that the AKC calls non-shedding dogs include the Bedlington Terrier, Bichon Frise, Chinese Crested, Irish Water Spaniel, Kerry Blue Terrier, Maltese, Poodles, Portuguese Water Dog, Schnauzer, Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier and Xolitzcuintli.

The 'non-shedding' breeds come in a variety of sizes and energy levels, important considerations when deciding what kind of dog is right for your family. Following is some information about these non-shedding breeds.

Bedlington Terrier: This breed is part of the Terrier Groups of dogs, and is an energetic, playful dog that is not overly rambunctious The Bedlington Terrier ranges in size from 17 to 23 pounds and has a curly, wooly coat.

Bichon Frise: This naturally gentle, playful dog is a small breed with a textured white coat. A non-sporting dog, the Bichon Frise is a companion dog that is usually between 9.5 to 11.5 inches tall at the shoulder. The Bichon Frise is considered a non-shedding dog, but does require frequent grooming.

Chinese Crested: There are two types of Chinese Crested dogs, hairless and powder puff. This toy size dog is sized 11 to 13 inches at the shoulder and is a great companion. The Crested is prone to frequent skin irritations and sunburn, so the owner should be willing to take precautions to prevent conditions that irritate the skin.

Irish Water Spaniel: This is an energetic Sporting dog that makes an active companion that is about 31 to 24 inches tall at the shoulder and weighs 45 to 65 pounds. According to the AKC, the Irish Water Spaniel has a hypoallergenic coat that requires brushing every few weeks.

Kerry Blue Terrier: This Terrier breed is an all purpose dog originally bred to hunt and retrieve. Kerry Blues have distinctive coats of deep slate gray blue to light blue gray, are about 18.5 inches tall and weigh between 33 and 40 pounds.

Maltese: this toy dog is distinguished by along white silky coat and weigh under seven pounds. Even though they are very small dog, they have boundless energy and make great family dogs.

Poodles: Poodles are a Non-Sporting dog that comes in three sizes; toy, miniature and standard. The Poodle is an active breed that requires daily exercise and regular grooming.

Portuguese Water Dog: A robust Working dog, the Portuguese Water Dog is about 17 to 23 inches tall and weights between 35 to 60 pounds. The profuse coat is hypoallergenic but requires regular grooming to be kept in the lion clip.

Schnauzer: This sturdy breed comes in miniature, standard and giant sizes. The Schnauzer is a sociable breed that loves children and are naturally protective guard dogs.

Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier: This breed is active, but less scrappy than other terriers. They can relate well to children and adapt to city or suburban life. The range in size from 17 to 19 pinches tall at the shoulder and weigh between 30 to 40 pounds.

Xolitzcuintli. This breed is commonly called the Mexican Hairless Dog, which comes in a variety of sizes.

The non-shedding breeds of dogs can help housekeeping easier because to do not shed as much as other breeds. Moreover, their coats may be hypoallergenic, so that they are less likely to cause irritation to people who suffer from allergies.
