First the size of the collar must be thoroughly checked before buying a collar. The dog's neck should be measured with a tape or a string and a comfortable 2 to 3 inches to be extra to fit the neck comfortably. Colour is the second factor to be taken into account. The collar should complement your dogs fur colour. A collar with a lot of trinkets will suit a pooch but not a german shepherd. Keep this in mind before your buy a collar.

Always buy a collar that is sturdy,. As the dogs are trained roughly so also collars need to be sturdy enough to suit their training activities.

For the short nosed and short necked dogs harness collars suit best. These collars are designed to go around the belly and not to choke these dogs. They are clasped at the top of the dog's back. Harness collars will prevent the dogs from having a breathing problem

Large breed dogs should have a strong lead and they pull when they walk. For these dogs the collar will be designed like chain and the size will vary with the size of the dog. The collar will put pressure on the dog's neck and prevent it from pulling the owner while walking. This is a also used as a training device for basic commands. These collars are called choker collars.

Another of the above variety is the pinch collar which has two prongs set inside which pinches the dog while moving. Experts feel that pinch collar are better than choker collars as they do not choke the dog.

While taking the dog for walk in the night or in case you have a large back yard, light and reflector collars will help. These collars can be turned on and of. These collars are more costly than the traditional collars.
