How do you train your dog to use crate?
You must be very careful when first showing your crate to your dog.
Follow these simple rules to help make the experience enjoyable for your dog
1. Place your pet's favorite stuff inside the crate. His toys, his blankets, whatever he likes!
2. If your dog is still a young puppy and not yet fully house trained then you should definitly include a stack of newspapers in case he loses control.
3. You should never use force while trying to get your pet to use the crate. You need to always talk to him in a comforting tone and try to tempt him into it with little treats.
4. You must never use this crate as a punishment. You do not want your dog to associate the crate with negative feelings. If your dog fears the crate you won't be training him correctly. You want your dog to feel at home in his crate!
5. Never punish your dog for making losing control of his bladder in the crate. Your dog does care about cleanliness of his area so if this happened then he just couldn't help it. This may take some patience on your part but it's very important to have patience with dogs if you are to train them correctly.
6. Do not disturb or allow others to disturb your dog while he is in the crate. Let the crate be your dog's place to have privacy and nap time.
7. Once your dog begins to like his crate you should leave him in there alone for longer and longer periods of time. Your dog will over time get used to being alone.
8. While you do want to give your dog privacy in his crate you should also be able to keep an eye on him. I suggest placing your crate in the corner of your living room. He should not feel like he is in exhile. He should feel like he has his own space within the confines of your living space!
9. You should not use a crate for dogs under two months of age. You should not use a crate for dogs that are sick.
10. Do not use a crate if its very hot and stuffy where the crate is.
