After years of begging Mom and Pop
Opened up my 10-year-old heart
To a love that just would never stop
College, travel, finding my way
No means to support a canine friend
But Sadie needed a rescue plan
So I found a way to fit her in
Lifestyle changes had to be made
Sweet, sweet Sadie now had me
Went to the shelter with a friend
Came back with Cleo, it had to be
Life full of play and long dog walks
The girls and I had it all figured out
Then Inca bounded into our path
She had to be with us, there was no doubt
A house full of dogs and one human kind
Three dogs are just as easy as two
I said to myself and to those all around
Told friends who considered me a kook
After 17 years of the joys they would bring
Each said sweet goodbyes with great dignity
Needing to heal, no dogs for me
Could I love another like I did those three?
Then shy Frosty crossed our path
Impossible to turn from her sweet sad face
Abandoned, abused, a bad, bad life
She entered our hearts and claimed her place

Post a CommentWell, you just know this would appeal to me, Langley. Dogs believe in unconditional love, and don't always get the love they deserve. At least your canine friends all ended up with a good person!
Very sweet poem, Langley! :) Dogs are such wonderful companions!
Pets are great. Nice job.
That's sweet. I own a trio of dogs. . . one of which is a pug with a really strange personality. I also have a cat who thinks he is a dog as well.
Great poem Langley! I too love dogs--they and horses are my favorite animals. Maybe I should get another one, as I haven't had one in years now. I think of all the many that we owned when I was a boy Wolf was my favorite or very near it. Johnny Yuma
Shelter dogs can make great pets for the right owner.
For me, it's London, a French poodle who lived 17 years, and Smokey, my Sir Pooch, who is now 12. I think I'll always have to have a dog roommate.
That seems to be my pattern, also. =) Cute poem.
Oh how wonderful. My two loves were Snoopy and Heidi-dog.
Lovely poem.
