Dog Obedience Training is an Important Thing for You and Your Dog

Beatrice Stephenson
There are different ways of training your dog, but the two most common ones used today are leash and reward training, the later also called "positive dog training". The positive training can contain different treats, foods are common, or a favourite toy to play with for a moment.

The answer to the question on what method might be the best for you, is what your purpose of training is. If you are owning a problem dog, a young one or an older one that hasn't been obedience trained before, training with a leash maybe is a must. If you have a puppy that just needs the ground rules in behavioural manners (and notice, all dogs should be properly raised from the start, then you will save yourself a lot of grief! Positive training is usually all it takes. If you want to train your dogs for different skills, like trackingand so on, reward training is probably necessary. Leash training will probably not be the right choise for that.

Leash Training
Working your dog with a leash will take some guidance for the trainer as well. You have to be sure that you do this properly, otherwise it will do absolutely no good and will only annoy your dog or even hurt it. You will use the leash for correction of the wrong behaviours, and you need to be consistent, so it won't just annoy your dog. You would want to use leash training first of all unwanted behaviour, such as lashing out at other dogs, or whatever it might be that is exiting your dog. There are a lotof information on how to effectively leash exercises, so do some research on it first, and you will surely find a solution to your problem.

Reward Training

The rewards you use for training your dog with this technique can vary. Some frolic are common, but it can also be a favourite thing, that you will let your dog play with when he has responded the training. The basics are to treat your dog for positive behaviour, and neglect bad. If you have a healthy stabiledog, and you start totrain it properly from the beginning, you will hopefully never have to go to harder forms of discipline, like the leash training could be.
In this category we can also add the so called click training. This is good of you are having problem to verbally train your puppy, or a hard time finding the right voice for your obedience exercises.
Many dog trainers and owners have taught their dogs successfully with the clicker, so it's really something to check out.

Remember when you start to do obedience exercises with your dog to be sure that you have the proper skills for it. If you find it hard to learn it by yourself, there are plenty of courses you can take. Just remember to be consistent and to keep doing it for as long as you have your companion.
