Dog Tip #4: Safe Summer Fun with Your Dog

IIIIII
One of the joys of owning dogs is that they literally are man's best friend. Therefore, it's not unusual that they go camping, hunting, and anywhere else that we feel like bringing them. So, while your dog is out and about with the family this summer, make sure that he's protected like one of the family. These tips will ensure that your pet has a safe and healthy summer experience.

1. Use Sunscreen
Believe it or not, pets need protection from UV rays just as much as humans do. Pets with light skin or very short, thin hair are easily exposed to harmful sun rays. In order to protect your pooch, apply sunscreen to any bare areas - tip of the nose, ears, abdomen, legs, and groin. Also, make sure that the sunscreen is pet-friendly, just in case your dog decides to take a lick or two. Nutri-Vet and Epi-Pet Skin Care both make good pet-friendly sunscreens.

2. Monitor Water
When out in the heat, dogs need constant hydration. Be sure to keep a separate water bowl outside and fill it regularly with clean, cool water to keep your dog from becoming dehydrated.

3. Keep Watch
Monitor your dog's condition. Make sure that your dog is drinking the water regularly, and if it's playing rigorously that it has times to break and relax. The heat can (and will) drain a dog's energy fast, so keep a watch to make sure that your pup isn't going overboard out in the sun.

4. Inspect Your Pet
Check your pet regularly for bee stings or bug bites. Dogs often like to chase things that they shouldn't, and bees are no exception. My dog has been stung many a time, and it requires a little bit of nursing on your part if it does happen. Some common symptoms of a bee sting include a sense of being disoriented, weak, and unenthusiastic or tired. If your dog has diarrhea, vomiting, or difficulty breathing, see a veterinarian immediately.

For bee stings, I usually mix a little baking powder with water and dab it on the sting to reduce swelling, then put an ice cube on the spot for a while. After a while, you will see your dog physically looking and acting much better.

These tips will make a summer trip or evening at home safe for your pooch, while still letting him be one of the family. Also, be sure to always carry emergency veterinary numbers on hand in case of a sudden situation!
