Dog Treats Recall

Lisa Marie
According to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), Hartz Mountain Corporation recalled one of their dog treats due to possible contamination. The recall was issued on September 3, 2010.

What is being recalled?
Approximately 75,000 bags of Hartz beef dog treats.

What's the problem?
A random test was performed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and it found Salmonella. The salmonella organism can make you very ill, causing severe infections in people and dogs, especially if you have a sensitive, underdeveloped, or weakened immune system. The symptoms are the same for humans and dogs, and can include fever, diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal pain.

Which specific dog treats are involved in this recall?
Hartz is recalling Naturals Real Beef Treats for Dogs. They were sold in 8-oz bags. They have a lot code of "BZ0969101E" and a UPC of "32700-11519". The treats were distributed by Hartz in the United States, but imported from Bertin S.A., a Brazilian supplier. Regular testing at Bertin before the treats were shipped here showed no Salmonella. No reports have been made so far involving illness or injury, but Hartz is taking every precaution to remove the product from stores and distribution centers.

What do I do now?
If you have these dog treats in your home, get rid of them. If you think you may have gotten ill from exposure to this product, it is recommended that you see a doctor immediately. If you think your dog is ill from exposure to this product, contact your veterinarian right away. To get more information on getting a refund, contact Hartz at (800) 275-1414 or www.hartz.com.
