Doggies are more and more leading the "good life." Dog treat producers, animal toy-makers, and manufacturers of dog vitamins, etc. all market to people who want to pamper their pets in the most extravagant ways. And it's a huge market--billions anually spent on little doggie sweaters and caps, treats, even doggie relaxation tapes. Sound a little over the edge? Whatever you think, this market is growing. One of the popular new ideas in canine luxury is the "doggie spa." It's a great business for people who love animals, have the start-up money and can afford to promote their business. A successful dog spa or day care business owner can make up to the six figures if he/she has good success in getting new and repeat customers. Boston, it seems, has been a good locale for these businesses for a while now. Some are incredibly luxurious.

The Common Dog Salon calls itself the premier dog grooming and spa center in Boston. Their prices for a bath and cut aren't so awfully out of line with even those of chains like Petco, my Memphis groomer. A full grooming for a medium-sized dog costs $30. But then it's the extras that really add up. To have a dog fully groomed, and clipped teeth costs $40. O.K. But then, look out! A full grooming and clipping with teeth brushing, frontline application and a 15-minute massage will set you back $65. Among their other services are a dog bed and breakfast for $50, day care for $30, and extra charges for medication and other services. They have a training class which charges $225 for 6 puppy development classes and $195 for adult smaller group classes. This is clearly the creme-de-la-creme of dog luxury. Call to make inquiries. They even can shuttle your dog to and from your home for a charge.

Camp Canine in Ashley, sounds almost sinfully luxurious too. This kennel/spahas huge indoor and outdoor playgrounds with lots of pillows for lounging. The day care is $24 per day. They board doggies with fresh linen changes and disinfectants daily and classical music playing in the background. Oh, and there are VIP Suites for fussy dogs. Those cost $50 per day. Canine massages can be given at the day-care or boarding or spa for $30 every half-hour. They ask that people call regarding the grooming prices.

I also found mention of another groomer and spa on a message board. This person was very complimentary of the sPooches Spa and Boutique. She said she woulding even think of taking her puppie anywhere else. They do offer free pick-up and drop-off in the Boston area, which might be a real benefit to some people.
