Dogs and ESP: Fact, Fiction or Unknown?

Jennifer Bove
One thing I can say for fact, that is dogs cannot speak in any human language. Because of this, we will be left to unravel this mystery by studies and educated guesses. Most reputable scientists that study the fact that dogs seem to predict certain things impress upon the fact that this indeed is not ESP, but rather keener senses than humans. Following are some instances that a dog senses things before humans.

Dogs and ESP-Earthquakes

It has been documented that after earthquakes, a large number of dogs were found to have gone off to safer places. They were also recorded as having strange behavior patterns before these earthquakes happened. Could this be ESP? More likely it is their keen senses. These dogs and many other animals can feel trembles in the earth long before humans. Because of this strong sense, they can actually feel where safer ground is.

Dogs and ESP-Humans About to Have Seizures

The fact that dogs can sometimes sense when a person is about to have a seizure is said to have started to occur after the dog being a companion for a while. These dogs are owned by people with epilepsy as a way to keep them safe because they alert others to the companion's seizure. However, after spending a great length with this companion, some of these dogs seem to know ahead of time, before the seizure. This again can be contributed to a dogs keen set of senses. Since it typically happens after a lengthy companionship, these dogs are probably just picking up small cues that even loved ones easily miss.

Dogs and ESP-Human Rescue

This one is pretty easily deciphered. It is not that the dog has magically found a person buried under an immense amount of rubble. It is not by ESP that a dog finds a missing person, dead or alive in a mudslide. When a person is lost in the woods, or the mountains and other sparse settings, it is again, their amazing sense of smell that brings these dogs to the injured, lost and even dead humans. Depending on the type of dog, at minimum, dogs have twenty five times the amount of smell receptors as humans. That is quite an impressive number, and makes it a little easier to understand rescue dogs, and how they do what they do.

So do I, or anyone else for that matter know for sure whether or not dogs have ESP? No, there's no way to know for sure. However, when you study the biological facts of dogs, it seems more believable that their amazing abilities are more likely due to their keen senses.

Very interesting article - I'm a dog lover and have heard of most of those things - but I'm just curious as to what ESP actually is.

There are seizure dogs for diabetics as well as those with epilepsy. I so wish my son had one.

Dogs can also sense who is a "dog person" and know to avoid certain people. Dogs are amazing creatures. They help us in so many ways.

Fascinating article! Dogs are pretty remarkable creatures. No wonder they're man's best friend. :-)

Interesting. Also, some dogs seem keenly aware that their human friends are sick, but other dogs seem not to notice.

Great article! It's pretty amazing how much dogs and other animals can detect that humans are completely oblivious to. And I remember reading about how, before the Indian Ocean tsunami a lot of animals were acting strange and moving to higher ground LONG before people had any idea an earthquake and tidal wave was coming.

This is just one of the reasons I love the furry critters.
