Dogs & Heartworm Disease

Heartworms are a common parasite that can potentially bring an early death to your beloved dog. It is essential that preventative actions be taken in the guise of medication and regular doctor visits. Not many people realize how likely it is for their dogs to get heartworms, but it should be of great concern to owners.

A heartworm travels into a dog via a mosquito bite. When one infected dog is bit, the mosquito carries the larva of the heartworm to another dog. It is then that the larva is introduced to the dog's blood stream and travels to the heart. It is there that the worms grow, sometimes up to 14 inches in length!

All breeds of dog are susceptible to heartworms if they are ever outside or exposed to mosquitoes. Since it is so common and easily transferred, it is essential that you give your dog heartworm preventative each month. Although a dog can be treated and cured if he does get heartworms, the prognosis will only be good if it is caught in its earliest stages.

The only way you will know if your dog has heartworms is if his veterinarian tests him. In addition to heartworm medication, be sure to provide regular checkups for your dog. Doctors also recommend having your dog tested before you travel with him, as you may be posing a risk to other areas that have a lower exposure to mosquitoes and heartworms.

Heartworms are potentially a very nasty demise for your pet. Luckily, there are easy measures to take in the prevention of the disease. Remember, it is very important to remember the heartworm medication each month. If need be, mark your calendar as a reminder. Your dog will thank you for it, as it may mean the difference between life and death.
