Dogs Who Are Heroes

Sunshine Wilson
Dogs are incredible creatures. They love us unconditionally and ask only for food, shelter and companionship in return. Dogs truly take us for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer and in sickness and in health.

Dogs can be easily trained by their owners to do many things; sometimes they even train themselves. Some dogs become heros, saving the lives of their owners or others. Here are some examples of just how heroic dogs can be.

Dog Hero, Jinx the Chihuahua

Jinx, a Chihuahua, began barking and awakened his owner, George Byrd, in the middle of the night. When Byrd looked outside his window, he saw a fire, and the flames were spreading to his apartment building. He called 911 and got all the other occupants out of the building. The fire was extinguished by the firemen and no one was injured. All because Jinx alerted his owner. Jinx is truly Byrd's hero.

Dog Hero, Eve the Rottweiler

Eve, a rottweiler, pulled his owner, Kathie Vaughan, out of a burning, smoke-filled car and dragged her to safety. Vaughan, a paraplegic and paralyzed from the waist down, credits Eve with saving her life and rightfully so. Eve was awarded the Stillman award for her bravery. Eve will always be a hero to Vaughan.

Dog Hero, Hero the Golden Retriever

A golden retriever, coincidently named Hero, was just that to his owner Gareth Jones. When Jones, who is paralyzed from the waist down, and his wheelchair became stuck in mud in a remote, isolated area, Hero grabbed onto a rope held by Jones, and pulled him to safety. Hero received the All-Star Animal Award for bravery. Hero certainly lived up to his name.

Dog Hero, DBoy the Pit Bull

DBoy, a pit bull, defended Roberta Trawick and her family from an intruder who broke into their home and pointed a gun at them. DBoy sprang into action by jumping on and attacking the man. DBoy was shot three times before the trespasser ran from the house. DBoy recovered from his gunshot wounds and is truly the hero of the Trawick family.

Dog Hero, Penny the Labrador Retriever

Labrador retriever, Penny and her owner Brenda Owen were out for a walk along a river when Owen noticed an abandoned wheelchair on the river bank. Looking into the river, she saw a woman's body floating lifelessly. On Owen's command, Penny swam out into the fast moving current and rescued the woman. The woman, who later said she had fallen out of her wheelchair into the river, was unconscious and was revived by Owen and others at the scene. Penny is very deserving of the title of hero.

Dog Hero, Buddy the German Shepherd

Buddy, a German Shepherd and his owner Joe Stalnaker were at home when Buddy noticed that Stalnaker was experiencing a seizer. Buddy, an assistance dog, raced to the phone and pushed the pre-programmed numbers with his teeth to call 911. The dispatcher who answered the phone heard Buddy's loud barking and sent help immediately. Emergency workers arrived to find Stalnaker unconscious on the floor with Buddy standing by him. After his recovery at a nearby hospital, Stalnaker said Buddy will always be his hero.

These are only six examples of dogs that have become heros by saving a life. Could it be that, every day, somewhere, somehow, a dog is saving a life? Could it be that some day, somewhere, somehow, your dog will safe your life?

thanks so much for sharing these. it's great to hear stories like these. my favorite, although they're all great, is Penny into the river to pull the unconscious lady to the shore for others to revive her.
