When the Sheltie enters your life you have no idea what you are in for. They are the most loyal of companions. They are smart and easy going and above all else loving. The Sheltie learns commands quickly, such as sit, roll over, lie down. You just need to have a positive attitude and a little patience to repeat and demonstrate the command for them and in no time at all they'll be performing like experts.
The Sheltie has a thick and luxurious coat of fur, so you must be willing to put in the time to maintain their lovely fur. They do shed, which means it's important that you devote the time to give your Sheltie regular brushings. Even better is if you start this at a young age so they can become accustomed to the brushing.
Sheltie's crave your companionship and are never happier than with you. Our dog would sleep on the bed every night, and all that was needed was a simple command "go to bed" and off he would trot to the bed. This amazing dog also has an uncanny sense of your emotions. They know when you're happy or when you're sad. They act in accordance to your emotions, and if you're having an off day their cuddles and love are endless. They let you know they are there for you in their own special way, and it's because of that, which makes them such an important part of your family.
As mentioned earlier, the Sheltie is a smart dog with a keen sense of direction. They can usually always find their way back home. They know where they belong and that is the direction in which they head. In fact, on a boating trip one summer we had been docked for all of two hours and when out on a walk our dog easily found his way back to the boat.
Shelties are not overly large dogs either. They are mid-sized which makes them the perfect size to cuddle and hug. They are not too big too travel in the car either, but make sure you adjust them at a young age as car sickness has been known to occur from time to time.
The best trait of the Sheltie though is their love and loyalty. They are truly a member of your family. This is a dog that will love you and cherish you and form a bond with you quite unlike any other. It is up to you to cherish that bond and give this special dog all they deserve in life.
