Dogster.com - The Place for True Dog Lovers

Jamie Burke
Dogster.com was started in January 2004 by Ted Rheingold, John Vars and Steven Reading. It was designed so dog lovers could come together to share their passion and devotion of their four legged friends. Over the past three years, the website has grown by leaps and bounds. It has surpassed the founders' expectations. The company is constantly growing and adding to the site as well as the staff. Based in California, the company strives to support and encourage the humane treatment of all pets. Through the website, they can help to educate the public on the proper and responsible care of pets.

A person new to pet ownership will find this site very helpful. It offers answers to just about any question a pet owner might have. If they don't have the answer available, there will be someone on the site that can. The site boasts over 500,000 members. Basic membership is free, but you can upgrade to Dogster Plus for a small fee.

Just to list a few of the items offered: forums, classifieds, strolls, treats, stars, diaries, private messaging, photo tagging, Gimme Some Paw, pet-friendly travel, pet-personality matrix, Pup Pal requests, photo contests, Dogster store, videos, community, and much more!

A person searching for adoptable pets can find hundreds on the site. The search can be breed specific or not. It can also be narrowed down to within a few miles of your home or up to several hundred miles, depending on your preference. Links to humane societies can also be found. If you are unable to adopt, then you can find a society eager to accept your donation.

Local listings are also available. Type in your zip code and a list of animal care providers will be displayed. The site even goes as far as to map out the location, address and phone numbers included.

For those who are dedicated to one breed, groups can be found. From Anatolian Shepherd to Pembroke Welsh Corgi, these groups get together to be pup pals. Support and friendship can be found. Dog lovers going through the grieving process can find the understanding they need to get them through the difficult time. When the world can seem so cold and so many people don't understand the grief of losing a devoted pet, this site provides the warmth and compassion they need. No one is there to ridicule - only support. Not only for the grieving parents, but the scared ones as well. Dogs suffer illnesses just as humans do. Dogster can help get important and possibly life saving information to the parent. Sometimes the financial burden of caring for an ill pet can be overwhelming. Groups provide fundraisers to help pay for the treatment. The love and support shown by the groups is overwhelming.

When you join, you can add as many dogs as you wish. Each one will have his own page with all the information you want to provide on your pet. Upload a photo, video, write how you found each other, indicate whether he has passed on, and even share what tricks he can do! The group at Dogster has tried to think of everything a pet lover might want on a website. Don't feel left out if you are a cat lover! They also launched Catster.com in August of 2004. You'll find all the same great things there as you do on Dogster.com.

Visit the sites and see how addicting they can be! Dogster.com and Catster.com - finally great sites for the true animal lover!

Cool! I wish I knew about this when my dog was a puppy!
