My husband sends me to a spa for the day where they pamper me wth hair, nails, pedicures, a spa lunch, a massage and a facial. It's fantastic but it is costly. You can do all sorts of wonderful things for your Mom without dropping a bundle. You can do your Mom's nails. Get those little toes dividers at any dollar store. Pick up some nail polish shades for her to choose from while you are there. Take a large Rubbermaid pan (also dollar store), fill it with hot water and some nice bubbly soap, let her soak her feet and you can poilish her toes. They also sell the little skin abrasive tools there so you can smooth her heels.
This goes for a facial as well. Get your Turby Twist or a little terry towel. Shampoo her hair for her or skip that and go straight to the facial. Put the towel around her hair and you can do a steaming over the sink, a clay mask or moisturizing mask and scrubby cleansing all with inexpensive products from the dollar store or local drugstore. You can give her a facial as well. We've all seen enough shows to know how to do this. You could gather some of her friends and have the Spa Day arranged for them all at the same time. Or do a Mother /Daughter Spa day. Before and after pictures would be a hoot.
You can take her out to lunch or If you have a tight budget make little tea sandwiches and have a Gaarden Party.Cut off the ends of white bread. Make cucumber and cream cheese sandwiches or little egg salad sandwiches, whatever sandwiches you prefer but make them cute. You can even cut them out with cookie cutters. Make a nice pot of tea or jug of fruity Iced Tea and float some fruit in it. If you drink do Mimosas. You can serve Iced Coffee. Lay out nice napkins and use a niice table cloth or pretty place mats. Cut some flowers and put them in a vase on the table. You set the tone, it doesn't have to involve a big expenditure. Think English High Tea. You can do this in your own garden or a park if you don't have a garden. The beach is nice as well if you are lucky enough to live close to one.
Maybe your Mom could use a Fashion Day. Take her shopping for something she wouldn't buy for herself. A nice pajama set, a cute sweater, a nice little pair of sandals since summer is coming. It can be something simple again followed by your fun luncheon at home or out. The idea is to spend some quality time together and make the day all about her. The up side of shopping with her is you know you will be getting something she likes not something you've guessed at and have to return.
A movie night in a movie house or at home can be pleasant. Find a nice chic flick and rent it to watch together. You can do the whole popcorn snack route, ice cream or do a nice healthy fruit snack tray. Get in pj's and just hang out together.
If you live far away from your Mom you can get tickets to a play, a movie or a nail place near her. You can get her dinner or lunch out. Most restaurants will do a gift certificate over the phone.
I f you're lucky enough to have multi generational Moms in your family and can aget them all together that woud certainly be special. All th Moms, Grand Moms, Mothers in law, daughters and new Moms. Wouldn't that be special? You can lay out a table full of spa items that each person can do to themselves. Another idea is to have Mary Kay party with a spa theme. Then your consultant will walk everyone through the facials, skin care and make up. Free. Plus you get wonderful samples and it's fun. The hostess gets gifts as well.
Other nice ideas are photos of the family , you can put together an album on line. You could get her some great books on tape but I find the spa day is not something I woud do for myself but I love to get it as a gift. You can make this a special Mother's Day treat and do a whole photo op together with th family. Pick a nice location, beach, park, wherever and get th caln together. Have the most talented of the family do pictures or ask a friend to do it for you. If you can afford it hire someone. You'll have memorable pictures and a memorable day.
You might also consider making your own card. Use some family photos and try your hand at scrapbooking type skills. Whatever it turns out to be , again, it will be special because you put your own time and effort into it.
Whatever you do it will all the more special because you've put time and effort into it. You will have a very happy Mother , Daughter, new Mom or Mother in law.

Oh I love the towel and hair wash idea. Man - would I love my daughter or hubby to do that! Woohoo - while I am sipping my pinot grigio and eating my chocolate covered strawberries. You have wonderful ideas for Mother's Day, Susan. Thanks a million times. I am going to leave this on the computer screen so when my hubby comes to check his sports pages, he'll see it. (wink)
