Do-it-Yourself: Heart Shaped Cake

You Can Taste the Love When You Make the Baked Goods Yourself

Valentine's day is right around the corner and its time to start thinking about special things to do and make. Gifts are more special if you make it! If you are not a baker it is okay because this cake will be simple to decorate. You will need to buy two cake mixes, and enough frosting to cover the cake - it is usually about two frosting containers. The frosting containers are usually right next the cake mixes and are about $1.50. The cake should be about $1.29 a box.

How to start making your Heart shaped cake!

1. Pre-heat your oven according to the directions on the back of the box for a circled pan. Make sure that the rack is in the center before you turn on your oven

2. Mix up the cake mixes in two different bowls so that the cake is evenly distributed.

3. Line your circle pans with parchment paper so that they pop out easily. Cut out two circles, and rectangles to cover the sides

4. After the cake is all mixed together pour one mix into one bowl, and do the same for the other. As of now you should have two pans full of cake.

5. Put the cake in the oven and make sure that you do not open the oven to take a peak. Just turn on the oven light to look because every time that the oven is opened up it increases the cook time by two minutes or more depending on your oven.

6. After following the time directions on the back of the cake box, and your cake it ready, pull it out of the oven.

7. Be careful the pans will be very hot. Put the cakes on a cooling rack, or on top of the stove to cool.

After the cake has cooled

1. The first part is over, not its time to shape your layers

2. Take a knife and gently go around each cake so that the sides loosen up.

3. Put your hand on the top of the cake and flip it over, have the plate you are going to present the cake on near by because that is where you will want to play the first cake.

4. After the first cake is placed on the plate, put a little bit of frosting on the top. If you want a little more visual place thinly cut strawberries in the middle on top of the lightly frosted first cake.

5. Pop out the second cake and place it on top.

6. Right now you should have two even layers forming one cake.

7. Cut a rounded V-shape at the top, and that will guide the bottom of the heart cake - be gentle. Remove the extra pieces of cake & viola, you have a heart shaped cake!

8. Now, you can use those two containers of frosting for the outside of the cake - you might not need to use all of the frosting, and that's fine.

9. After the cake is frosted you can decorate it with red sprinkles, write something on it with frosting pens, or if you bought white frosting add 8 drops of food coloring to get a desired pink or red.

10. Now the creativity is up to you! Design your cake any way you like & if you have extra strawberries if you decided to put strawberries in the middle put them on the edges of the cake - it will give it a classy professional look!

Happy Valentines Day! I hope these tips helped.
