The Dollar Bill
I've been around since 1862
I'm amazed at all I've been able to do
Survived Depression, recession, two world wars
I can buy bubble gum, clothing and cars
Been called all kinds of terms and names
Most of my features still look the same
Seen the cost of living increase a lot
Unfortunately for you I have not
Remember when I got you a bag of chips and a soda?
Back then you still had money left over.
Remember when I bought you a gallon of gas?
Why does that seem so far in the past?
Remember when your wife thought I was some money?
Now she's telling you, "I need more, honey"
All this talk saying I won't last
They must not remember my enduring past.
I'll always be around, maybe not worth much
But keep me anyway when times get tough.
-Yours truly, Dollar Bill

Post a CommentLove the poem. My mother worked when I was 2 for the Army as a secretary. Her annual salary was $2,000. When I was a kid, the Saturday morning movies were 9 cents. When I was a teenager, gas was 19 cents a gallon. LOL, youngsters!
Great I love this!
My wife informed me yesterday of the ridiculous -- a bra costs $60. That's absurd. My friend's father bought their house in a fancy town for $1,800. Now in the 1960's or so, that was the cost of a Volkswagen Beetle. Now that much can easily be spent for a camera. So when I think of how my richest family member (my great-great grandfather who died in 1907) had $500,000 when he died, I appreciate just how much that would be today!
@Carol - Wow! A a month?!
excellent poem, also remember the salaries were so much lower too, my first salary was 67.50 a month in an insurance company in 1977
I loved this!
This is awesome and brilliant. Giving a voice to the dollar bill is very creative. I love it. I also recall being able to get a gallon of gas in my Torino for 89 cents.
Absolutely brilliant! Wow! Brings back memories and makes me laugh too. Thank you J.
What a great poem :) Thank for sharing your clever writing.
Enjoyed the humor and I remember the days when the dollar was worth more but I still try to hold onto it as much as possible~
