Stats from the CDC Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Survey 2005 tell us that 1:4 women and 1:9 men from across the United States will become a victim of domestic violence.
Raising awareness is the first step in ending abuse. Times are tight for a lot of people and money is still scarce. Fortunately, there are things that we call do to help without a large cash investment.
If you, a friend or a loved one is in danger there is help. The National Domestic Violence Hotline operates 24 hours a day 7 days a week. The number is 1.800.799.SAFE.

Display materials
Contact your local domestic abuse agency for materials. The agency may ask for a small donation toward printing costs but most often there is no charge. Use these to create a display for your office or place of worship. Leave the display up for the month of October.

Collect school supplies.
Put out a box and work and tape a flyer to it that asks for school supplies. Backpacks and school supplies are often lost in the shuffle. The local Wal-Mart or other discount retailer may have crayons for as low as .50 per pack. These items may also be used for child therapy sessions.

Wear a purple ribbon.
We've all seen the classic ribbon loop for causes. Purple is the color for this cause. Cut a 3"-4" strip of narrow ribbon. Fold it to make a loop at the top. Secure with a safety pin. Pin it to your shirt or jacket. Making a difference really is that easy!

Donate time.
Call to ask about volunteering. Many agencies will be sending mass mail outs before and during October. Extra hands are usually welcome.

There are many books at your local library that can be checked out for free. A reading group can choose to read about abuse and donate the books to a local agency. Used bookstores often have inexpensive titles available.
