I thought that by forcing him to go on the potty just might do the trick. If I seemed more enforcing then maybe he would buckle down and do his thing. I had read in a book that you shouldn't force a child to go to the bathroom because it will push them further away, but I had to see for myself. Just like the book had said, this method pushed him further away from the bathroom and deeper into diapers.
When his baby sister was born I knew that I would have even more problems with his potty training. Two kids in diapers were starting to get annoying and my husband and I couldn't take it anymore. When we would ask him why he went to the bathroom in his pull-up instead of his potty, he would reply, "well the baby goes pee in her diaper." He didn't want to believe that someone was taking his place and that he was being forced into a whole new realm of life outside of his comfort zone.
One day my mother and her friend were visiting and I was discussing my potty training issues with them. My mother's friend told me a story about someone who wore diapers to kindergarten and everyone teased her, so that was the day that she decided to stop wearing diapers. I couldn't bear to see my three year old in diapers any longer. There wasn't anyway that I was going to allow him to be in diapers in kindergarten.
I tried everything, every method that I could think of and my three year old was still in diapers. He knew how to spell his name, but not pee in the potty. I was beginning to get overwhelmed with the double diaper expense and no matter what I did he only seemed to be regressing instead of progressing.
One day while I was out my husband called me and told me that he had found the perfect potty training solution. I was ecstatic and very interested in his new proposal. He said that he made my son walk around with no pants or underwear, and if he peed on the floor he would be in big trouble and would have to clean the pee off of the floor and take a shower. My husband said that my son was about to pee and he ran into the bathroom and sat on his potty.
When I got home I had seen that this new method had worked. We decided to call it the Donald Duck potty training method. My husband said that my son has to get used to not wearing a diaper because that was the whole reason that he kept peeing in it. My son didn't like this new approach at all especially the whole idea of not wearing any pants. When my husband would get up in the morning for work, he would make my son walk around diaperless. I would sometimes feel sorry for him and give him a pair of pants to put on. I guess that this helped him to realize that wearing pants was a privilege. After about three days of this, my baby couldn't take it anymore. He refused to wear a diaper or to pee in one. After about a week and a half, he was completely potty trained. It has been about one and a half months and I am so happy that potty training my son is over and complete, I just have to train the baby now.
