Donald Trump Gets Dissed at the White House Correspondents Dinner

COMMENTARY | At the White House Correspondents Dinner, President Barack Obama and the guest comedian, Seth Meyers, had much to say about Donald Trump, very little of it complimentary. However they may have reckoned with the nature of their subject.

According to the Daily Caller:

"Acknowledging Trump, who was 'really proud' to have 'accomplished something that nobody else has been able to accomplish,' Obama said, 'No one is prouder to put this birth certificate matter to rest than The Donald. That's because he can finally get back to focusing on the issues that matter, like: did we fake the moon landing? What really happened in Roswell? And where are Biggie and Tupac?'"

Seth Meyers was even more merciless than President Obama. "Donald Trump often talks about running as a Republican, which is surprising. I just assumed he was running as a joke."

While the audience certainly laughed, the exception was Donald Trump, who was said to be distinctly unamused.

Leaving that aside, President Obama and Meyers may have reckoned without understanding the exact nature of their subject. Donald Trump has the capacity for many things, but feeling shame is not among them. He understands the concept of shame, for he is adroit at using that and other emotions to gain the advantage in business deal making.

Thus, giving Trump attention, even in the back handed way Obama and Meyers did, is sort of like punishing a sex addict by fixing him up on a date with a porn star. It just does not work as intended.

Now, anger is an emotion Trump can feel and he apparently felt it as the president and Meyers sent barbs in his direction as he had to sit back and take them. Another one of Trump's qualities is his capacity to hold a grudge. His feuds with such people as Rosie O'Donnell are the stuff of legend.

What sort of revenge Trump might contemplate for being dissed by the President of the United States can only be imagined. Running for president for real would not be one of them. Trump must know in his heart of hearts that he cannot win and that, besides, being president is not as much fun as being a master of the universe in the real estate world. One cannot tell Harry Reid or John Boehner, "You're fired!" and not be met with gales of laughter.

That doesn't mean that Trump cannot wander the country, darkly hinting at some secret revelation about the president that he is on the brink of springing on the public. That should have President Obama worried. Does Trump actually know something or is he bluffing? Trump does not make for a kind enemy.
