Donate Your Frequent Flyer Miles to Wounded Soldiers and Their Families

Kaylee Todd
Are you one of the many millions of people who have a few thousand frequent flyer miles sitting in their account which will probably never be used? Are you always saying, "I'll never have enough frequent flyer miles to earn a free ticket!" Well, now you can help earn tickets for a very worthy cause - for injured servicemen and women, and their families. Donate those frequent flyer miles to Fisher House. Here is what their website says about their "Hero Miles" program:

"The nonprofit Fisher House Foundation administers the "Hero Miles" program for the Department of Defense in accordance with Public Law 108-110, the FY 05 Defense Authorization Act. The program is comprised of individual airlines whose passengers donate their frequent flyer miles to assist service members and their families. Specifically, Fisher House Foundation provides free airline tickets to military men and women who are undergoing treatment at a military or VA medical center incident to their service in Iraq or Afghanistan, and their families.

There are two categories of eligible recipients:

  • Service men and women with an approved leave of five or more days may be given a free round trip airline ticket for a trip from the medical center to their home and return if they are not eligible for government funded airfare.
  • Qualifying service men and women may be given free round trip airline tickets to enable their family or close friends to visit them while they are being treated at the medical center."
To date, Fisher House has provided almost 7,500 tickets (worth more than $10 million) to hospitalized servicemen and women from Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom, as well as their families.

At this time, Alaska Airlines, America West Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and Northwest Airlines, United Airlines, and US Airways accept donations of frequent flyer miles from their passengers. Learn how to donate frequent flyer miles on the Fisher House Hero Miles webpage, or check out the airline "charity miles" phone numbers and websites shown in the "Resources" section at the end of this article.

Many people do not donate to charities because they do not believe they can donate enough to make a difference. But now you can provide a valuable service to our wounded military service members and their families by donating your frequent flyer miles, and it will not cost you a dime! Your donation of frequent flyer miles will help our wounded servicemen go home for a visit and will also give the families of wounded servicemen and woment the ability to go visit their heroic family members.

Check out the "Additional Resources" section at the end of this article for instructions on how to donate frequent flyer miles on Delta, Northwest and Midwest Airlines.

I've donated thousands of miles to Fisher House over the past few years. Great organization.
