Donate Money to the Best Animal Charities

Angelie MacKenzie
People will always help people. But what about animals? If you're willing to donate money, you should consider being one of the few of us who donate to help animals. But what are the best animal charities? You certainly want to donate to a cause that will spend your money wisely.

Noah's Wish (http://www.noahswish.com)

Noah's Wish is one of the organizations that save animals during disasters such as hurricanes. I first heard about them after Hurricane Katrina - they were on the scene helping to save animals in the affected areas. Only trained people are allowed to go into disaster areas. Noah's Wish also trains volunteers to assist in the field with rescues. If they didn't train people to go into disaster zones to save animals, I'd hate to imagine what that would mean for the animals that need help. If you're interested in becoming a trained volunteer, they have a session coming up next year. See their website for more information.

Friends of Animals (http://www.friendsofanimals.org)

This is one of my favorite animal charities. They have important animal-related articles on their website and they put up billboards that promote the spaying and neutering of cats and dogs.

Friends of Animals is probably best known for their certificates that you can purchase to spay or neuter your cat or dog for a reduced fee. Before buying a certificate, make sure that there is a veterinarian in your area that accepts the certificates (not all veterinarians accept them). I paid myself to have my own pets fixed, but when I decided to fix a feral female cat that stayed on my property, I purchased one for her. I saved a lot of money! For more information, simply go to programs on their website.

Best Friends (http://www.bestfriends.org)

Best Friends is located in Utah. They help organizations in other areas start programs such as animal foster care, adoption, spay/neuter, etc. They are looking forward to a time when there will be no more homeless pets. In the meantime, they are the home to about 1500 animals. Donations can go toward many areas of need, one of which is sponsoring a pet. They also have many different levels of memberships that go toward important causes such as medical care, etc.

Humane Society of the United States(http://www.hsus.org)

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is a non-profit organization that has been around for 53 years. "The HSUS is the nation's largest animal protection organization with more than seven million members and constituents. The HSUS protects all animals through legislation, litigation, investigation, education, advocacy and field work" (http://www.hsus.org).

Other Groups

This list is by no means a complete list of animal charities. Other worthy causes include your local animal shelter and rescue organizations. To search for more animal welfare groups, go to petfinder.com.
