When I volunteered at the Chicago History Museum, located at 1601 North Clark Street in Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood, I did so in a number of different capacities. One of the most enjoyable volunteer jobs that I was involved in, was helping to convert paper, hard copy records into electronic formatted documents. The interesting material in those records was astounding, and I learned so much about paintings, art, and a variety of costumes. If you want to become a volunteer at the Chicago History Museum, be prepared to commit to six months or one year. You can stay longer, if you want, but they do like for you to make a concerted effort to give them at least that amount of time.

The training is very extensive, but it's fun. I learned how to handle the artifacts and attended some very interesting seminars. Another benefit of volunteering at the museum, is that you get a discount to the museum store and invitations to museum events. Some of the available volunteer opportunities currently available include Visitor Services School Group Greeter and Catalog Data Entry Assistant.

If you want more information, call the Chicago History Museum at 312-642-4600, or download an application from their website.
