Donating Oocyte: How to Donate Oocyte and What to Expect

Traci Haug-Howell
Everyone likes to donate items to someone in need. There is an increasing desire to donate oocyte. This is usually where a donor gives eggs. This is used for women who are infertile but want to have a baby. Oocyte can be sued for treatment of certain disorders that lead to female reproductive failure has been a possibility since 1984. The oocyte from any donor can be recovered as an embryo after it has been fertilized within the body or recovered as an egg and inseminated in vitro to yield an in vitro fertilized embryo.

One of the things that you will have to face is ovum transfer. This is the transfer of a normal egg from a female donor to an infertile recipient. This was developed in the United States but has stopped being performed in the United States. The reason that it is not longer used in the United States is because the fertile donor must be inseminated with the recipient's husband's sperm would be at risk for STDs. It has also been stopped because if the conceptus created is not recovered by uterine lavage procedure, there could be a risk for an intrauterine pregnancy in the donor woman causing the child to be killed. Still the last reason why the United Sates no longer does this procedure is that without the use of drugs to induce superovulation, the success of ovum transfer per insemination cycle is less than 10%.

This means that the use of in vitro fertilized donor eggs has been widely applied to many births that in many different countries. There are two main reasons that in vitro fertilization has made the use of donor eggs more feasible. The first thing has been the introduction of ultrasound-guided egg recovery techniques. The other advance is the success in cryopreservation (freezing) of in vitro fertilized human embryos. Cyropreservation of embryos allows it to become unnecessary to have perfect synchronization of the donor and recipient women's menstrual cycles making the logists of donation a lot simpler.

When it comes to the length of donating oocyte, it all depends on time. Once you have been selected to donate, the cycle lasts for about five to eight weeks. It is important that you to remember that during the last two weeks of the cycle, you will be unable to leave town. During these weeks you must make an office visit roughly every other day between the hours of 8 to 10 a.m. from anywhere around fifteen to thirty minutes. During these times you will have an ultrasound and a blood test. You will need one day that you have off of work so that the oocyte retrieval can be performed. If for some reason you are unable to make these visits, be sure that you talk to the doctor or staff member you are working with right away.

As a precaution, you may be asked to refrain from intercourse during the donor oocyte cycle, as well as up to sixteen days after the oocyte retrieval. You will be extremely fertile until this cycle is complete and having intercourse could result in pregnancy. You should not have to change anything about your daily routine when it comes to oocyte donating. The only time you may have to change something is if you have enlargement of your ovaries causing you discomfort. Remember not to change anything such as exercise once you start your IVF cycle.

This procedure does not require you to take any medications except Tylenol unless your doctor requires it. The cost and payment information all depends on who you go through and the length of time you may have to wait until you can donate oocyte. Be sure you ask the individual before you start what the cost and payment will be.
