We've shown ourselves once again to be sensitive and responsive to fear mongering. Our general attitude seems to belie our better nature. We seem to be saying, 'I'm doing fine, screw the rest of you.' Our biggest fear of all is that the government is going to take something of ours away.' Large numbers claim to be happy with the status quo. I must assume these are happy campers who have never been refused, denied, dropped or blocked from basic care because of high premiums, unreasonable deductibles or corporate insinuation. Are we really so ungenerous and disingenuous?
A while back I saw a woman walk out of the gastroenterologist's after wrestling with the $500 deductible she was expected to pay for a needed colonoscopy, a simple procedure that may well have saved a life and tens of thousands for future care. People are forced to make these bad decisions every day.
Many Americans have excellent results, outstanding outcomes and satisfactory care from our health care system. Insurance companies generally provide adequate protection but the uninsured avoid preventive care because doctors, hospitals and the system cannot (will not) provide affordable out of pocket care. These time bombs walk the streets and populate the workplace until a catastrophic event occurs, then they fall under Medicaid and the pool of taxpayers pay for their care or the hospital is left with an uncollectable account. Wouldn't it be better if their was a universal pool where every citizen made some contribution and the mathematic magic of actuary science worked its wizardry on a full set of possibilities. A cooperative for profit effort would be much preferred over any dictatorial bureaucracy, public or private.
Rather than forming false perceptions listening to pundits, politicians and an the hosts of T.V. and radio entertainers we eschew the responsibility of seeking out the truth. Where were the angry voices hundreds of men fell in Iraq every month? Why is it there is not a whisper of complaint when black men are murdered on the streets every night and other forms of genocide are transacted live before our eyes. I continue to be shocked and ashamed.
All the braying jackasses should tickle lock and take a time out. All protestation is impolite. I don't like it. Question, talk, debate but for god's sake be polite.
